I have practiced throughout Maryland with patients struggling with substance use misuse and disorder and moderate to severe alcohol use.
Through my 15+ years in this work, I feel I am best equipped to support individuals who are struggling with alcohol/substance use or misuse that may be attributed to co-occurring mental health disorders, past trauma, or unknown reasons. I have worked with a variety of patients ranging from those experiencing minor struggles that may be impacting relationships to those hitting 'rock bottom' and lacking hope. If you are interested in changing any aspect of your drinking or substance use behavior, together, we can make that happen.

Therapy is a powerful tool that can be used to unlock a person’s greatest potential and I am so glad you’re here! As a therapist, it is important to me to meet people where they are and work with them to create meaningful change. Life can bring feelings of anxiety, depression, and isolation; feeling difficult and hopeless at times. I am eager to help individuals feel hopeful again. I strive to create an authentic, welcoming atmosphere, understanding that trust is the foundation for a successful therapeutic relationship.

I believe therapy is an incredible opportunity for personal growth. Through dedication and perseverance, you will have the chance to make positive and healthy changes in your life. Change comes from taking the first step towards learning how to address personal difficulties, while also learning how to take responsibility to change what you can and accept what you cannot change. I am here to support you through this process. I believe it is necessary to lead with compassion and empathy, while also creating a safe environment for us to work through this process and towards achieving your goals.

The first steps to a counseling session can be scary, but it is also a courageous act in understanding yourself and living a more engaging life. My philosophy in providing care has always been "helping others help themselves." I believe that each individual has the ability to change and grow in their journey. In sessions I provide a safe, compassionate, and collaborative space. I will also acknowledge that our world is vastly different and more chaotic than it was a few years ago - covid pandemic, racial injustice, climate change - and I will do my best to offer you some direction in these collective struggles.

Let me help you tell your story. Nietzsche famously said, "To live is to suffer; to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering." I believe that we spend our lives looking for answers and meaning in life, and my passion is helping others untangle their darkest fears, their deepest worries, and emerge feeling both freer and more in control of their lives. I will walk beside you in the darkness--not leading, but guiding with a gentle hand as you move toward a brighter future.

Often we are faced with decisions that will have a big impact on the course of our life. Even if we already know the better option, it can feel totally overwhelming thinking about all it takes to make the change. Whether it's an addiction, loss of sense of self, or religion, everything else can slip to the background making it hard just to get through the day. When we work collaboratively in therapy, you will experience new things about yourself and what your priorities really are while letting go of what we are told we should be or do.

Alcohol Use Therapists

Are there specific medications for alcohol use?

There are oral medications approved to treat alcohol use disorder—such as disulfiram, acamprosate, and naltrexone, which also comes in an injectable form. These medications do help people reduce their drinking as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone helps reduce cravings, disulfiram can make a person feel sick when they drink, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.

How do alcohol recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other patients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals live at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff can also include people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other tools for recovery.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for alcohol use reduce the amount of alcohol they intake. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.
