I am a senior clinical psychotherapist in my field (over 15 years), and I am licensed in 3 states (Arizona, Nevada & Texas). I’ve worked in both inpatient and outpatient hospitals managing patients in crisis, as well as carrying patients from acute care into long-term recovery. My specialties are substance abuse and dependency, dual diagnosis, codependency, trauma, marital and relationship tension and impulse control disorders. I am also in long-term recovery, which allows me to roll up my sleeves and work WITH you. I promise we can get to the other side together!

My main specialty is adoption and attachment. I was adopted and have reunited with my birth parents and have worked with hundreds of adoptees as well as adoptive parents seeking to understand their child/young adult. I work best with those who are seeking insights into themselves. I can help guide you if you are looking to do some self exploration and find out why you keep repeating the same patterns. I have worked extensively with teens, young adults, and with parents. I have treated many families who are struggling with navigating issues related to family dynamics.

In my experience, we all find ourselves stumbling in life in some way or another. I have extensive training and experience working with clients that struggle with self harm, suffer from depression and anxiety, struggle with low self esteem, are working through couple and family conflicts, feel swallowed by shame and/or guilt, and are stumbling on their journey towards healing, self acceptance, and happiness. My role is to be the therapeutic resource that brings the overflowing tool box of options to use on your journey. Together, as a team, we find and follow what works best for you to meet your therapeutic goals.

I strive to provide a safe & sacred space for you to explore issues that may be troubling you. Together we will look at how your conscious & sub-conscious mind may be interfering or supporting you in living the life you want to live. I offer a variety of methods. Together we will find the method or combination of methods that work best for you. My counseling style is supportive and non-confrontational. I take an ecological approach and will work with you and those you would like involved in your treatment as desired or needed.

Joan Dewey (she/her), brings 25 + years of practice experience having worked for many years in rural/remote integrated team settings with indigenous groups. She is licensed to provide psychotherapy (telehealth) in Alaska and Arizona. Ms. Dewey moved from Alaska in 2019, now lives in Northern Arizona, and continues to work with individuals of all ages, life circumstances, including those with histories of traumatic events, grief/loss, depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, addictions, and life transitions. She is BIPOC and LGBTQ+ affirming.

We live in "interesting times," and my clients are looking for help as they navigate the ups-and-downs and unpredictability of life. Relationships, career paths, sexuality, family issues, work issues, change on all fronts, trauma and loss are some of the things that clients bring to talk about in their work with me. I am a dedicated and compassionate psychotherapist offering Telehealth services to individuals in Arizona. With a focus on serving populations aged 13 and above, I am particularly passionate about working with the LGBTQ+ community including non-binary individuals and polyamory. I am also passionate about working with individuals with substance use disorders. I have worked with a variety of people and agencies during my long career and now I am starting my New Chapter by providing individual and family therapy through the power of telehealth.

Knowing your story and offering support, as well as reflection and encouragement are the reasons why I enjoy the counseling process! These attributes are also a large part of what makes therapy successful. I have experience working with individuals who suffer from anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, religious/spiritual conflicts and life transitions. I completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Bethany University in California, a Master of Science Degree in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University in Arizona and have worked in the Behavioral Health Field for the past 24 years.

Instead, depression, anxiety, and lack of connection or meaning are familiar. We long to restore these connections and find success, even joy! It is my aim to come alongside my clients and their families, and support them in the journey back towards health and wholeness - to find tools to cope and grow in the present as well as build healing for a fulfilling future. I offer secular and faith-based therapy and love to incorporate each clients' individual faith into our work.

I use a “bottom up” approach to allow me to integrate each approach as needed to best fit each client. I love working with adults, teens and children to explore their path to their best self.

I am a National Certified Counselor and a Licensed Associate Counselor working towards my Professional Counselor license (LPC) under the clinical supervision of Patrica Dobratz. I earned my BA in Anthropology and Mathematics from Grinnell College and my Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from South Dakota State University. I am EMDR trained, DC 0-5 trained, and have extensive training in play therapy, including neurobiology, brain development and trauma. I take a trauma informed approach to counseling, working to understand the impacts of past experiences and increasing your ability to live life as your authentic self.
