Transformational counseling is appropriate for other loss situations where grief arises, such as divorce, illness and invasive medical treatment, break up, job loss, and other life transitions.
Grief shatters life as you know it; the challenge is in putting it back together. Your healing begins with your story. Tell me what happened, how you feel. Let's look at your relationships and who you are as a result. I will listen, sit with you in compassionate presence as you uncover your own personal skills, and guide you through this transition. You can rebuild your life into a comfortable shape while honoring your connections to the past. I can help you find your way back to wholeness. Loss can be transformed.

I work with people who are grieving the loss of their sense of self, and who are craving reconnection to their identity and desires.
With the overwhelming demands of life and work, we can often lose sense of who we are and feel as though we are going through the motions. Losing our sense of self, an important relationship, or even a loved one, can leave us feeling disconnected and alone. There is so much that demands our attention, it’s unclear where to start. If you are looking to heal and recover, hoping to reconnect with your inner joy, and searching for moments of peace, I might be able to help.

I work with a broad range of struggles: sadness, chronic pain and illness, overthinking, anxieties experienced through or about the body, difficulties with enjoyment, identity, shame, loss, impossibility, fear.
I am a psychoanalytic psychologist working remotely with folks across NYS and in person in Hudson, NY. I think of therapy as a way to help people get more used to what living feels like. For some who come in for therapy, living has felt relatively smooth, and they’re drawn to session to get help with specific struggles that have come up suddenly. For others, living has felt too hard for quite some time. In our sessions, we learn how to sense our way through these experiences together. We’ll explore how it feels to invite a witness in to your experience and we’ll deepen your ability to care for yourself as you move through life.

Are you feeling stuck, caught in a difficulty in which you can't seem to resolve? Does the same situation repeat over and over in different forms? Life is hard and sometimes we need to help of another person, a nonjudgmental listener, to move forward. Whatever problems you face, relationship difficulties, struggles to balance career and personal life, anxiety, grief or health issues, a therapist can serve as your guide. Through the therapeutic process you may also explore your personal history as it relates to current difficulties and, in the process, discover new ways of coping.

Helping people help themselves. Adults and couples. Anxiety, depression, dependency, uncertain fears and specific symptoms. Conflict, school and job stress, trauma, bereavement. I draw on decades of experience (and was the Clinical Unit Administrator for two agencies). With empathy, time, and care, I help people to draw on their strengths to learn to be good communicators and effective problem-solvers and to gain a sense of control, meaning, and wholesome relatedness.

Whether you are dealing with something specific -- loss, chronic illness, issues with intimacy, family, relationships, sexual orientation, gender or identity -- or a more ambiguous sense of being stuck, confused or overwhelmed, I am honored to provide the space and support to help you regroup and move forward in your life.
I appreciate that we, as humans, do the best we can with whatever resources are available. My function, as a therapist, is to be an additional resource -- of support, emotional safety, and connection. Our sessions will focus on exploring your individual experience and increasing your awareness of your self and how you operate in your world. I believe that having a safe environment and willing partner with whom to examine the full spectrum of how you are in your context - with all its inherent possibilities and limitations - facilitates agency and personal growth. It can also provide a sense of wholeness and corresponding relief.

I am conducting teletherapy for the foreseeable future from my home in NY for NJ based clients. The key to a successful therapeutic relationship is finding a therapist with whom you can develop a healthy trusting relationship. I believe therapy can be effective by exploring past experiences and relationships and examining how they are impacting current life stresses. A willingness to change is also critical. Healing is rarely a linear process, and no one should have to address life's many challenges alone. I hope to assist you in navigating these challenges, and I believe this starts with building and maintaining a supportive and collaborative therapeutic relationship. My goal is to provide a safe space for you to express yourself, free of judgment. I am passionate about empowering others to learn healthy coping and communication skills, manage stress and anxiety, address traumatic experiences, and improve relationships with both oneself and others.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
