I seek to bring the best of my learning to match up with who you are. I don’t treat a diagnosis, per se I address the underlying, not so obvious factors that lock a person into patterns of behavior & patterns of response that give rise to the symptoms we see in things like depression, social and relational struggling, anxiety and a general feeling of life as painful. Models- Attachment Theory, Polyvagal Theory, and Affective Neuroscience are my building blocks. AEDP & ISTDP speak to me in particularly in creating lasting change.

Mental health symptoms can exert a painfully strong hold on our lives and take an exhaustive toll. Symptoms can range from anxiety or depression, to a sense of being stuck, to reactions stemming from current circumstances or one’s life history. My practice is guided by the principal that you and I working collaboratively, engaged in a project of speaking and listening—being curious about one’s inner world—can have a significant impact on one’s symptoms. While this practice focuses on reducing suffering it also seeks to produce change.

Anxiety, depression and trauma can be treated holistically. Often, people feel like they have different parts of themselves inside that are pulling in different directions. It can be challenging to sort through it all alone. If you are feeling depleted, tired, confused, or overwhelmed, a good therapist can help you slow down and put the pieces together. If you are feeling reactive and on edge or feeling like running away, or just plain shut down, good therapy can help you restore connection with yourself and others. And if you are feeling like traditional talk therapy is not enough, then you have definitely come to the right place!

I specialize in mood disorders and anxiety. I've published five books--Undoing Depression is probably the most familiar---on depression, stress, and happiness, My latest, "Rewire," was released August 2014, and I'm working on a new book about self-destructive behavior. My approach is basically psychodynamic, with a lot of CBT and mindfulness. I believe that anyone can change--the brain can literally be rewired--but it takes a lot of patience and practice. Most of the people I meet have been battered around by life, and it's left scars--difficulty hoping, difficulty trusting. It's my job to mobilize that hope and trust.

I have experience working with those who have suffered emotional, physical, and sexual trauma, depression, anxiety, obsessive and compulsive tendencies, personality disorders and ongoing complex autoimmune diseases, such as Lyme.
The experience of suffering is unique for each individual and deserves respect and attention. I work to create a safe, non-judgmental environment where you can speak openly and be heard. Using language as our medium, I listen closely and with curiosity to hear your questions, fears, and desires. I wonder with you in a collaborative process about how your narratives have been formed and intervene to support revisions, bringing you into greater alignment with your personal truths. Putting words to experience lays the groundwork for greater mental freedom and lasting change to take place.

Everything from life transitions, career issues, relationships, intimacy, trauma, depression and anxiety, as well as existential matters.
Therapy is about meaning making. I listen closely to my patients without judgment and without jumping to conclusions. My goal is to understand you on your own terms—free of any rigid diagnoses or other labels. I believe that the heart of this work resides in the therapeutic relationship itself, and to this end, I seek to build bridges of clarity and comfort between us. Our work together will consist of attempting to understand you in a holistic, depth-oriented manner. We will consider how your past might be influencing your present and examine how certain patterns in your life might not be serving you well.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
