As an LPC with over 16 years of experience, I have dedicated my practice to the treatment of trauma, family and couples therapy.
The idea of going to counseling can be stressful. Some believe counseling is for people who are severely disturbed or have extraordinary problems. Counseling is for everyone as we all experience stress, family issues, relationship problems, and confusion while making decisions. Everyone's problems are unique; therefore, your treatment will be to be customized to meet your treatment goals at your own pace. My commitment is to be thorough and careful but also to not prolong your treatment longer than necessary.

In my practice I help clients with depression, stress and anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, & trauma and abuse. I work with my clients to create an open and safe environment where thoughts and feelings can be shared without fear of judgment. If you can imagine I have a "therapeutic toolbelt" with various techniques and skills that, with your feedback, we will collaboratively use to create a unique and custom therapeutic experience together. These tools are centered around a holistic approach, to include mindfulness and yoga, for those clients who would like to explore all aspects of their mental wellness.

The one thing we share is the universal need to be heard without judgment or fear of shaming. The truth is, we have all been there, sometimes lost, sometimes angry, on top of the world then disillusioned. As much as we love our family and friends, sometimes they understand us the least.

I specialize in working with individuals who work in high risk occupations such as law enforcement and the military. I also have a great deal of experience working with the partners and family members of what I like to call "High Risk Humans". If you feel your life is stressful and complicated, don't hesitate to reach out to me because in reality, you don't have to work in an obviously stressful occupation to feel like you have a high stress, high risk life.

My approach to therapy is informal, and some would venture to call it untraditional; I believe therapy shouldn’t feel rigid and forced, and, instead, should feel like holding space with an unbiased friend or family member.
Brenda Messer is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) who specializes in working with children, adolescents, families, and adults with histories of trauma, anxiety, depression, behavioral and adjustment challenges. With a focus on self-awareness via mindfulness practices and cognitive behavioral therapy.

“The good life is a process, not a state of being. It is a direction not a destination.” Carl Rogers. Experiencing depression , anxiety and/or feelings of being overwhelmed by toxic relationships with ourselves, our partner, our family members and/or our coworkers, can make us think that there is no hope . Therapy is always a good way to start the process of creating fulfilling, peaceful and happy relationships.

Do the days get really hard sometimes and you find yourself isolating from others? Or maybe becoming increasingly irritable? You may notice yourself becoming forgetful, finding it hard to concentrate or notice yourself becoming unusually emotional? Does it get to the point where it starts to interfere with family life, work, or just functioning on a day to day basis? This can be a really difficult place to be in your life, during these times it may feel like there’s no end in sight.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
