Couples sometimes have intimacy challenges, conflicted family relationships, communication and trust issues.
I work with adult individuals of all ages and life stages, especially those who want to deepen their self-understanding and growth. I enjoy helping people work through a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, low self esteem, eating and substance misuse. I particularly like helping people to improve romantic and work relationships. Open communication and trust are essential in creating an intimate relationship that thrives. Gaining self understanding is often the key to becoming a more tactful and therefore effective communicator.

Whether I am with a child, teen, adult, couple or family, I strive to earn my clients' trust with honesty, warmth and humor; a secure and close therapeutic relationship allows for the most healing and progress. A lot of psychological distress occurs when people feel cut off from or ashamed of some of their feelings. I help clients access and feel compassion about previously disavowed feelings and parts of themselves, allowing for better self-care and self-regulation, and greater closeness with loved ones.

I offer individualized assessment, individual, group, and family therapy, in/out of home ERP treatment, and intensive therapy.
Struggling with OCD, anxiety, body-focused repetitive behaviors, or mood-related challenges can be scary to navigate on your own and can get in the way of the life you want to live. I work with people to provide specialized treatment and education to learn what's holding you back from a fulfilling and meaningful life. Together in a compassionate and non-judgmental space, we will work to identify how the thoughts and stories you have about yourself and life get in your way, how to make room for human experiences in the present moment, and how to act in the service of your values.

I work with clients to understand their own thinking processes and belief systems, to develop new coping strategies and learn new skills to interact with family and others interpersonally, and to make lifestyle adjustments to bolster internal psychological and coping resources. Making targeted changes in these areas leads to improvements in overall mood and well-being for families and individuals. I work with children and adolescents using tools that are engaging and interactive and take their developmental needs and abilities into account.

Besides traditional dynamic psychotherapy approaches, I use training in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, EFT and Internal Family Systems.
Deciding to work with a therapist is an important step. Finding the right therapist can be challenging. My style is one of openness and curiosity, bringing the most current theories and perspectives in psychotherapy to my work with couples and individuals. Continually learning from the explosion of knowledge happening in the world of the body, emotions, and brain, I teach my patients about how the brain works to regulate their emotions. I've trained extensively throughout the past 30 years to incorporate highly effective therapy methods into my clinical practice (described below).

My treatment specialties include: anxiety and depression, teens, family therapy, addiction, major life changes, grief and loss, couples counseling, and coping with chronic disease/pain.
Therapy is about healing. It's about bringing careful attention to emotional wounds (both old and new) and working with the difficult mental/emotional patterns that interfere with our ability to be healthy and happy. In my practice, I create a client-centered, safe, and confidential environment that makes this work both possible and rewarding. I participate fully in the client's process, holding the space that can allow healing to occur. Most would describe my style as interactive and relational. Depending on the client and presenting need, my treatment modality ranges between Cognitive-Behavioral, mindfulness-based, and psychodynamic.

I have been working as a therapist and clinical supervisor for more than thirty years. I love helping people discover their hidden skills, strengths and values which may have become lost in life’s struggles. Whatever the issue, my job is to assist you in realizing you have the capacity to untangle and manage whatever brings you to my office. My approach involves separating the person from the problem; helping people manage the kinds of negative thoughts we all have which can increase stress, tell us bad things about ourselves, or convince us to do things that are not in our best interest.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
