Hello, my name is Valerie Boughner. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of South Carolina and Florida. I was born into a military family in the United States, and I have lived in many states in the USA, Japan and Panama. I am active in sports and I travel in my spare time. I have been providing family and individual therapy services for over 17 years. I help families and individuals coping with depression, anxiety, trauma, relationship/communication difficulty, grief and loss, life changes, and rejection to overcome their difficulties and reach the highest goals they have set for themselves.

I earned my Master’s in Clinical Social Work from NYU in 1989, and have worked through the lifespan with clients in a variety of settings. I have been committed to helping people from all walks of life to find the courage to transform their lives. Whether you are experiencing distress related to your past or present, I utilize creative, non-stressful methods to support you in identifying and being able to use your strengths. The goal being able to enhance your self awareness towards healing so that you can lead the life you want.

I help clients with a variety of issues such as: overwhelming emotional experiences (anxiety, depression, anger, shame, etc.), traumatic pasts, confusion or aimlessness in life, compulsive behaviors, and other difficulties that somehow limit them from most fully living the lives they prefer. I am a trained mindfulness coach, and I utilize meditation training as a central part of my therapeutic process. I also maintain a person-centered attitude toward all clients, and I aim to establish and maintain a trusting relationship with clients.

I am a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Career Therapist with 20 years of professional experience. I work closely with wonderful people like you who lead very busy lives, whether due to a highly stressful job, career, business or just being a parent trying to do it all. Many of my clients feel anxious, depressed, and/or overwhelmed balancing work and life. Others are experiencing a significant life transition -- a career change, the end of a relationship, or a relocation. I also work with healthcare providers, attorneys, engineers, entrepreneurs, and those in academia, among others.

Dr. Lockard was awarded her Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago, Illinois. She completed her internship at the Kentucky Department of Corrections where she focused on the treatment of male and female sex offender treatment. Her experience includes years of forensic and clinical treatment and evaluation in out-patient, in-patient, and correctional settings. Such experiences include: Community Mental Health Clinics, Autism Clinics, County and Psychiatric Hospitals, and state behavioral and social services agencies. Her areas of expertise (all bilingual) include: clinical, criminal forensic, psychosexual, and neuropsychological assessment and treatment.

My goal is to work together towards gaining a better understanding of your stressors and actively exploring how to heal, grow, and thrive. I have many years experience working with adults and children suffering from depression, anxiety, OCD, anger issues, trauma, and abuse. I have also worked in the field of drug and alcohol addiction. After my graduate studies, my primary focus and training was working with children suffering from ADHD, ODD, depression, and anxiety. I used behavioral management coupled with parenting strategies to improve the overall parent/child relationship. I gained incredible knowledge and insight regarding chronic pain as well as grief and loss while working with the elderly population through home health care and hospice.

Our mission as a practice is to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment that values the client/therapist relationship. We acknowledge that counseling can be intimidating and challenging. Our commitment to our clients is to provide a co-created space that is safe, empathetic, and encouraging that invites sharing, processing, and healing. I enjoy working with clients who are struggling with issues that are either acute (recent) or chronic (lifelong). I find that it is particularly important to form a working relationship that will focus on a path of discovery that will begin to identify possible solutions. Often problems can be resolved quickly such as parenting issues and sometimes issues are very complex and require examining a thorough history of life experiences from childhood to the present. I am always amazed how my words stick with people for years and years and I believe that a journey of discovery takes many paths and has many time frames.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and have worked in private practice in the Clemson area for over twenty years. My practice includes adults, adolescents, families, and couples.
