I realized through my own healing journey that understanding and navigating our interior world is not just a skill but an art that can profoundly impact our lives.
Welcome! I understand the courage it takes to reach out. I am the owner of InDwell, a mental health service for children, teens and adults. I am a licensed therapist, certified play therapist, and trained in EMDR. I spent 20 years working as a nurse providing me with an understanding of how our physical & mental health are intertwined. My approach addresses the whole person believing that wellness comes from harmonizing the mind, body and spirit. I offer a Christian perspective for those seeking it, while respecting the unique worldview and beliefs of each client.

Art Therapy helps your brain organize itself, challenging those thoughts that get stuck on loop, and discovering new things about yourself in each moment.
Hold on... Wait... I understand... Taming anxiety and self-doubt sure can feel exhausting at every turn as you try to manage it all, please other people, with so little left to please yourself. We live in a world of countless binaries, expectations, and assumptions about our lives, and escaping them in order to come into our own can be an incredibly difficult process. I’m not interested in that old-school, buttoned up, head shrinker version of therapy. You’ve come this far because you want to feel passionate about what you do and get your creativity flowing again. Join me at the table where art and psychotherapy meet.

People of all ages can use art therapy to gain the ability to make their own choices and feel in control.
Living to your fullest potential will take courage, but it can be fun. If you work better with your hands or want to get back into your body and on your feet, take some time to focus on and leave behind negative thoughts. You will find this is a safe place to use as a springboard for setting a more positive tone in your life. You may even connect with others who are lifetime learners. Flourishing doesn't happen alone. It doesn't take a hammer to bloom.

I incorporate mindfulness skills, art, sand tray and humor in session.
Hello there! Life has felt overwhelming for many of us these past few years, and I'm so happy you are here looking for some extra support. Therapy can provide a nonjudgmental and objective space to help process the stressors of life. You may be here because you are dealing with things like emotional detachment, insomnia, nightmares, avoidance, irritability, depression, and intrusive thoughts (which can all be reactions to painful life events). Our brains can and do heal just like other parts of our bodies, and that healing can have big impacts on not only ourselves but those we love.

You may be thinking, "What if I'm not good at art?" Luckily, you don't have to be! Art Therapy can provide a safe way to process emotions by indirectly talking about them through art "prompts.
Life can feel overwhelming; many of us find ourselves juggling work, school, activities, meetings, appointments, household needs and so on. Especially when we're faced with a new stressor, or something traumatic, finding the right support can be even more stressful. As a board certified & registered clinical Art Therapist, I am specially trained to use art in a psychotherapeutic setting. I love working with kids, teens & young adults in my private practice as we navigate emotions such as anxiety and depression, growing our self-awareness, self-regulation & anything life has thrown at us, big or small.

Mija, no matter what others tell you, you are enough. Maybe you don't believe this yet, but by the time you walk out of your last therapy session, you will have acquired the necessary tools and experiences to believe this is true. Reaching out for help isn’t easy, te entiendo. As an immigrant woman myself, I’ve seen the pressure we feel to succeed for our families, the fear of vulnerability, the feeling that we live in two worlds, or the difficulty of putting our emotions into words without feeling like a burden or a failure.

I love to incorporate different mediums into my practice, including but not limited to art, plants, and body movement.
I have worked with survivors of trauma for ten years. As a child survivor of narcissistic and abusive parents myself, I have fallen in love with the work of assisting survivors on their own path to safety, healing, and even joy! I specialize in survivors of narcissistic abuse, especially within adult children of narcissistic parents and intimate partners of narcissists. Having a Narcissist parent/partner is something you can only truly understand if you have experienced it personally, and it is my mission in life to use my own experiences and knowledge to help YOU understand and heal from the impacts of this kind of abuse.

Art Therapy

How does art therapy work?

The process of making art allows people to express themselves. Art-making can take many forms, such as painting, collage, or sculpting. The therapist asks questions that the work elicits, such as how the person felt while creating their piece, or if any memories surfaced that they can discuss. The therapist will then work with the patient to process their experience, understand themselves better, and work toward change.

Does art therapy help with trauma?

Art therapy can be a valuable treatment option for those suffering from trauma. Traumatic experiences such as combat, rape, or childhood abuse can be so painful that articulating them can be too scary or painful; creating art allows people to express themselves without words, and tell their story in a different way. The physical nature of creating art can also help people feel rooted in the body, which may benefit those who feel disconnected from their body in the aftermath of trauma.

How long does art therapy last?

The duration of art therapy varies, but a common length for treatment is 10 to 15 weekly sessions. Some people may see improvement in just a few weeks, while others may choose to remain in therapy longer term. Patients should periodically discuss their goals with their therapist to make sure the two are aligned on process and progress.

What are the limitations of art therapy?

Art therapy is helpful for many people, but a limitation is that it doesn’t have as robust an evidence base as other forms of therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy. The evidence on art therapy is mixed; some research demonstrates its benefits, while other research suggests that it has little impact on patients.
