Therapy helps work through your thoughts, emotions, perceptions, interactions and relationships in a safe supportive atmosphere. A good therapist will support and guide you to gain increased perspective and insight while also empowering you to self-assess and identify solutions/needed changes, not impress their beliefs on you. The active change agent in your journey to increased happiness and fulfillment is YOU; a good therapist just guides the way. I am happy to help whether you are adjusting to change and transition, wanting to improve or change relationships, or hoping to learn better ways to manage/cope with stress/emotions.

Did you grow up without a consistent and healthy relationship with your parents due to their substance abuse, mental health issues, or verbal and/or physical abuse? Do you struggle with feelings of abandonment, rejection, worthlessness, inadequacy, and low self-esteem? I want to work with you to develop a positive sense of self and to heal from the past traumas associated with your parental and family unit. Life does not warn you about the adverse effects of having a parent that struggles with substance abuse or mental illness which can leave you to sort out the byproducts of your trauma. I have experienced this exact pain.

You're a Barbie girl in a Barbie world. Life in plastic is fantastic! Unfortunately, your life is not in plastic. Much like Barbie, you've reached many accolades. You have a cute apartment and a nice car. You long to feel confident and secure. You have your Ken. Your Ken gets treated much like Barbie's Ken. When you lack control, you feel afraid. You don't tell people that you're afraid. Perceptions are then made that you are mean, aloof. You can be referred to as the naughty word that rhymes with itch and witch. You get the idea. No worries, though! You are in the right space! You are a Barbie. I'm Therapist Barbie!

I am a firm believer that the greatest experiences and our most difficult moments include other people. Relationships with others are not always easy to navigate. Experiences we have with other people can have a huge impact on how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. I love to support people exploring their relationship with themselves and how that can have a positive impact on our relationship with others. I have knowledge and experience working with individuals and couples who have experienced trauma, loss, anxiety, depression, parenting, postpartum and identity issues.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.” It is when we are faced with our greatest fears when we are in need of someone who we can trust to hear those fears and assist us with equipping ourselves with life skills/tools to overcome and conquer them. I have over 28 years of clinical experience assisting others on how to achieve their best life. It is my belief solutions to our problems are within us.

I want your marriage to last a lifetime & my genuine, nonjudgemental approach in the therapy room creates a safe space to explore a variety of relationship dynamics prior to your wedding ceremony.
You're newly engaged and excited about your future, but want to be proactive and invest in premarital counseling to explore expectations and prepare for the rewards and challenges of marriage. You know you don't want to repeat a family cycle of divorce, get in the practice of poor communication, or not be able to recognize the warning signs of unhealthy relationship dynamics should they appear down the road. You know now is the time to prepare and enhance your connection, celebrate your strengths as a couple and recognize your growing edges.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and I am also certified in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART).
Relationships are such an important aspect of our everyday life. Whether it's a personal relationship or a professional relationship, navigating our own pain and self awareness while trying to build and maintain our relationships could be challenging. In addition to helping adults and teens in understanding and managing feelings and thoughts that impact how they relate to others, I specifically provide support for couples who are navigating through the pain and healing from an affair.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
