My focus as a therapist is helping you understand and embrace your own identity and your own values. There is powerful strength in being yourself, and we can discover that strength together. My expertise is particularly in working with body image and eating disorders, with people who have or wish to be evaluated for autism and/or ADHD, with people experiencing self-injury or suicidal ideation, and with people who have "treatment-resistant" or severe anxiety and depression. I partner with patients who want to understand themselves on a deep level, while simultaneously offering concrete skills and tools to alleviate current symptoms.

Dealing with overwhelming emotions and stress can often be an isolating experience, but it does not have to be. My goal as a clinician is to create a safe setting for healing through compassion, understanding, and trust. Our work together will focus on gaining a stronger understanding of yourself while obtaining skills and techniques to forge meaning through difficult moments in life. I believe that high quality therapy comes from a customized approach by taking evidence-based methodologies and tailoring them to an individual’s personality and needs.

Do your emotions overwhelm you? Do they get away from you and lead to behaviors that affect your relationships, career and/or sense of self? Has it been more difficult than usual to manage your worry thoughts or your mood? It can be difficult to build the life you want when strong emotions get in the way. While it might not seem possible now, you CAN rein them in and I’d like to show you how.

My focus in working with patients is for them to feel deeply understood by me and to feel safe in exploring their issues, whatever they might be. This understanding is best accomplished, in my mind, through the use of empathy. What is it like for you to be you? For me, the relationship between patient and therapist must point in the direction of healing oneself and through oneself, others. I fundamentally believe, like others before me, that the patient is the one who guides the process. Similarly, it is the patient who is my best teacher.

Are you living the life you want? Stuck or unsatisfied in your relationships? Tired and depleted? Maybe you have friends, but find yourself wondering who you would really call in the middle of the night. Or your romantic relationship feels stuck, like you are repeating the same pattern over and over. We all know that deeper connection and intimacy are necessary for a more satisfying life, yet we feel that we are not getting what we need or want. Or maybe your pain is related to your job. You are working hard but not getting the recognition you crave. For many of us, we feel depleted or anxious and don't fully understand why.

My professional expertise is primarily rooted on establishing a positive rapport with the client. The individual's needs are of paramount importance when trying to establish said connection. I don't believe much in theoretical concepts but rather in how the dynamics are presented between the dyad when processing and dealing with sensitive personal issues, which ultimately may help us to develop a stage of psychological balance and emotional fulfillment.

When excessive worries and stress arise, we often overthink each and every decision. It can begin to feel as if we are stuck in our lives. Relationships, work, sleep, and enjoyment are all negatively affected. With warmth and openness, I'll guide you as you gain insight into your interpersonal relationships, behaviors, and choices. I'll help you learn to trust your instincts and reduce self doubt so that decision making becomes easier. I encourage you to bring whatever struggles you may encounter, both big and small, past and present, to our sessions.

Welcome! I’m glad your journey has brought you here today. Do you feel like you’re hiding the real you? Do you worry that you make decisions based more on other people’s approval rather than your own sense of truth? Do you feel disconnected from yourself and your relationships? Do you desire to live your most authentic life? Maybe you don’t know what it looks like. You might even feel afraid to find out. Life can feel scary at times. And sometimes we face moments that overwhelm us, that cause us to shut down and disconnect.

I believe there is great value in a curious and non-judgmental exploration of our feelings, thoughts, actions, and relational patterns, in the presence of another person. An interactive and collaborative psychotherapy process can increase empathy for oneself and others, and strengthen ones capacity for making meaningful change, and coping with challenges that arise throughout life.

My social work education and continuing teaching in the field commit me to an eclectic approach to psychotherapy. What does that mean to you? While I lean toward the object relations and intersubjectivist schools, it means I'm listening to you and thinking about you not simply through these (or other) theoretical lenses, but as the person you are and the situation you're in. It means that I view the relationship we form together as the basis for the changes you want to make in your life.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
