Together we can explore issues related to trauma, substance use, processing grief, learning healthy coping skills, improving communication, resolving conflict, managing anxiety, addressing cultural identity concerns and reducing race-based stress.
Navigating life’s journey can be challenging at times for all of us and yet we are here to learn the lessons that are often unique to our own experiences. If you too are now aware of the need to tap into the power of self-knowledge so that you can live a life that helps you find purpose, fulfillment, confidence and competence, your decision to seek therapy is a natural step in the right direction. My role as a therapist is to assist in the process of helping you heal from the emotional “dis-ease” that can be part of the human experience.

Do you feel unsatisfied, stuck, or anxious in your relationships? You watch as other people go on to have successful relationships while you feel stuck in repeat. Are you on the verge of divorce? You might be driven in other areas of your life but feel like you can't quite hack it when it comes to relationships. You might have tried a plethora of therapists in the past that don’t connect with you or seem not to understand where you are coming from. You are looking for someone to tell you like it is, understands where you are coming from, and invest in your future success.

Hello, I am Susan. In my practice, I specialize in individual, couples, and group therapy. I work mostly with adolescents and adults of all cultures and populations to promote mental wellness. My client-centered therapy is grounded in traditional psychodynamic and family systems work, cognitive-behavioral, rational-emotive, and mindfulness-based techniques. I do my best to temper the process with creativity, imagination, and humor, along with practical solutions and concrete goals that work to provide clients with a tailored treatment plan that can be integrated into their daily life.

Since my youth, my passion has been to do the work I am doing, and I have been preparing and improving my skills toward that end. My goal is to enable clients to feel heard, identify potential causes for their concerns, create a treatment plan, and collaborate with them in their healing. My greatest satisfaction is working with clients to enable their highest potential, and their greatest strength, wisdom, and serenity. I work to develop a deep understanding of a client's perspective, then engage and join with the client to move forward from there. Please see my web site for more information about the services offered.

Maybe you have already tried traditional talk therapy and wish to explore and know yourself on a deeper level. Maybe you feel like you are carrying past burdens and have a desire to be free from the burdens and traumas of the past. Others may desire a need to identify patterns in behavior and relationships, understand difficult emotions, or challenges that arise with partners, family, or at work. If any of this sounds familiar and if you desire to gain clarity in any of these areas, Internal family systems may be a good fit for you.

Substance Use Therapists

How do substance and drug recovery or rehabilitation programs work?

In inpatient programs, individuals live in a facility with other clients in recovery; in outpatient programs, individuals reside at home. These facilities are staffed with healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors, and psychotherapists. Staff often also includes people who have recovered themselves, serving as mentors and guides. These programs may use abstinence, harm reduction, detoxification, psychotherapy, and other methods.

How do 12-step programs combined with psychotherapy work?

Members of 12-step programs help each other reach abstinence and work to maintain it. These programs promote complete change in the individual’s emotional, mental, physical, and even spiritual perspectives. Some programs require that new members attend 90 meetings in 90 days. Many people do attend these programs in conjunction with their work in psychotherapy; the combination of therapy along with 12-step can be extremely effective.

How does harm reduction combined with psychotherapy work?

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, harm reduction prevents death, injury, disease, overdose, and substance misuse. People who choose harm reduction for substance use reduce the amount of drugs they consume. It is not abstinence-based like a 12-step program, but combining harm reduction with psychotherapy proves to be effective for many people.

Are there specific medications for substance and drug use?

There are medications approved to treat substance use disorder—such as buprenorphine, methadone, naltrexone, and acamprosate. These medications do help people cope with substance use as well as avoid the problem of relapse. Naltrexone can help reduce cravings, methadone is an opioid medication used to treat severe pain, and acamprosate may help ease symptoms like poor sleep and anxious feelings.
