After working as a therapist for the past 15 years (Seven years in private practice while living in Colorado), I’ve learned that I do my best clinical work with clients who appreciate structure within the therapy session; prefer a direct approach; demonstrate a readiness and commitment to making their mental health a priority; attend sessions on a regular basis and take action to practice new tools outside of therapy sessions.

Life can just really suck sometimes! Therapy can often be the jump start needed to help you move in the direction of healing. I work primarily with adolescents and adults. Currently, I am the only certified FBT Therapist in the state of Wisconsin, which is the leading treatment approach for adolescents/young adults diagnosed with an eating disorder. In addition, I also treat anxiety, OCD, social anxiety, and mood related difficulties. I am also here if you are navigating a difficult life transition... those can be brutal! I have been a therapist for just over 10 years and would love to hear more about your goals!

My practice style mostly draws from Rogerian Psychotherapy (person-centered, insight-oriented) and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
I work with many young adults (university students and young professionals) and with people from across the lifespan. I have experience with both mental health needs (mostly life transitions, depression, and anxiety) and with folks wanting to change their relationship with substance use (who are at a point in their recovery process where outpatient therapy can meet their needs). Feel free to learn more at moorepsychotherapy.org

Motivational interviewing, mindfulness, and guided meditations are utilized as well.
Hi! My name is Victoria (she/they) and I am a queer therapist at Love Psychotherapy here in Madison. Within my practice, I have a passion for uplifting and empowering individuals by meeting them where they are and holding space for them during our sessions. This includes providing a trauma-informed and identity-affirming environment within the therapeutic space. Fun fact: I am also a birth doula, which I believe positively impacts my approach, particularly with perinatal clients!

Additional strategies include CBT, DBT, Prolonged exposure therapy, motivational interviewing and exposure response prevention.
It is common to feel trapped by our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and we often struggle to identify the impact they have on our well-being until it feels too overwhelming to handle. This is particularly true for those suffering from OCD behaviors. My goal is to create a safe and supportive space where clients can explore their thoughts and behaviors to better understand the impact they have on their well-being. I work collaboratively with clients to establish a plan of care that draws from evidence-based approaches. My role as a counselor is to be a partner in helping clients move through, not around, concerns in their way.

Life is hard, plain and simple. Life is even more difficult when you or a loved one are struggling with mental health and people around you are constantly invalidating and dismissing those real emotions. The stigma that surrounds mental health is powerful—it can make the idea of therapy seem as though there is something wrong with you, when in reality, there is such power in realizing you need help and reaching out for it. Sharing your story in a confidential space may seem daunting, but ultimately, the process can lead you to greater self-awareness, self-esteem, and most importantly, a more fulfilling life.

Motivational Interviewing Therapists

How does motivational interviewing work?

Motivational interviewing aims to uncover a person’s internal motivation to change their life. Toward this end, the therapist listens, empathizes, and collaborates with the client based on their perspective; the therapist doesn’t adhere to a predetermined plan for change or impose their viewpoint on the client. Discovering an individual’s most important reasons for change, and guiding them to achieve those changes, can empower people to shift from ambivalence to action.

Is motivational interviewing evidence-based?

Yes, research shows that motivational interviewing can help treat alcohol and substance use — and in different ways such as reducing drinking, reducing resistance, and increasing the likelihood of staying in treatment. Motivational interviewing has also been shown to help people lose weight, adhere to medication regimens, improve diet for those with Type II diabetes, and improve healthy behaviors in children.

How long does motivational interviewing last?

Motivational interviewing is a short-term therapy that can last just one or two sessions. In some cases, motivational interviewing may be used in conjunction with longer-term therapies, but for most people, motivational interviewing is a brief intervention that aims to help patients understand their personal, specific, and internal reasons for changing their life.

What differentiates motivational interviewing from person-centered therapy?

In person-centered therapy, the individual is in the driver’s seat of the treatment process, creating space for them to trust their instincts and arrive at their own solutions. The two approaches are similar because motivational interviewing is also client-centered; however, person-centered therapy is more open-ended while motivational interviewing is somewhat more structured; the goal is to change, and the therapist helps the client specifically discover their internal motivations to modify their behavior.
