My practice focuses on the problems of adults/adolescents through family/couples/individual work. I work with my clients to identify problems, and address barriers to change, when change is possible. At times, therapy is a process in which we can learn to cope better with stressors that cannot be changed. I strive to maintain a non-judgmental, empathic atmosphere, and the most important measure of success is when my client feels helped.

I work with families to navigate life transitions and help reduce tensions between family members.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist and have been helping people to improve their quality of life for over 25 years. I believe that change is achievable when we find greater balance; between emotions and rational thinking, between work and play, independence vs. seeking help, attention to ourselves vs. attention to others. There are many reasons why we can become stuck-- thoughts, habits, past experiences-- and therapy can help to identify and strengthen more effective ways of managing problems.

I specialize in providing one-on-one sober support to clients who are struggling with alcohol and or drug abuse issues. I also provide my clients with a personalized health and wellness plan. The goal is to help you live and maintain a sober life. We will work together daily for three months. Getting sober and living sober at home is what I believe is a better approach than attending a rehab. Why? At a rehab, you are going through the process of getting sober with others and the transition of coming home often is an adjustment within the family and getting back to the daily routines. You can get sober at home!

Gaining emotional insight can pave the way for improved family interactions.
There are no parent manuals. Sometimes our children present us with challenges that we are not equipped to handle. But, an objective and collaborative well-trained clinician can address these challenges that can ultimately make parenting more enjoyable. With over 30 years of experience working in schools as a teacher, special educator and clinical psychologist, I see myself as a partner in parenting. I enable parents to adopt a mindset that aligns with their child’s temperament and I offer insight into their child’s developmental needs.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
