In cases of separation and divorce, our Clinical Director is trained to provide co-parenting counselling and divorce coaching.
Parenting is not an easy task! You love your children, only want the best for them, and have probably tried a whole variety of strategies to help them. Still, your children and your whole family might be dealing with difficult emotions and challenging behaviour. Maybe, as parents, you are also re-shaping: adding new members, responding to new challenges and in need of new arrangements.

I specialize in the areas of family conflict, parenting, and high conflict separation and divorce.
Life can be challenging and although we are often able to cope with the difficulties that come our way, there are times when we can become overwhelmed with our thoughts and emotions. An issue may arise that feels too difficult to manage on our own. I provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental space for you to explore whatever issues have brought you to seek support. I will help you move forward with clarity, confidence, and self-acceptance. It is perfectly normal to reach out for help. We will work together to meet your goals and find solutions that work for you. As a trauma informed therapist, I offer EMDR therapy.

I like to help clients with these issues: depression, anxiety, relationships, divorce, dating, loneliness, talking about childhood, and purpose.
You are wondering about getting counselling. You may feel anxious or depressed. It could feel like low mood, longing or sadness, or no feeling at all. You may struggle with an inner critic, which makes you feel on edge. However you describe it, something doesn’t feel quite right and it’s affecting your work or relationships. Or maybe some moments from the past are influencing you now, or are still fresh in your mind, stopping you from having the life you want to have.

Although I enjoy working with a wide range of presenting issues, my area of focus is children and adolescents of divorce and/or separation.
I believe in the importance of a supportive and trusting therapeutic relationship. I have been an elementary school teacher for over ten years and have taught, coached, and counselled children of all ages. As a teacher, I enjoyed creating opportunities for learning and growth that also supported the emotional and psychological growth of my students. My passion for helping children in this capacity inspired a move from teaching to counselling. I counsel children, adolescents, and young adults from a client centered approach.

Going through separation and divorce is a rough process. The yelling, the tears or the fights that happen in the house is keeping you up at night and/or make you worry about your future. It is already difficult to discuss what belongs to who at this point, not to mention there are children involved. You want your children to be ok, but not sure how. Things that your partner said or did in the past seem to be stuck in your head and make you angry or sad. You want peace, you want no conflict and a way out of this emotional disaster. Talk to me, I am here to listen.

As a divorce coach, I work with families to develop effective plans that put the children first, revise existing plans, improve communication , and help with co-parent decision making.
One of the most difficult things to do in life is to ask for help. I understand that making the first call is stressful, and I am open to hearing your concerns as soon as we connect. I encompass a non judgmental approach, based on strength and resilience. I work collaboratively with my clients to empower them to make important changes in their lives. As a counselor, I support each client's own experience of their story. I take a holistic approach to understand the many layers that surround life challenges, to create connections and promote change.

After a separation and divorce it brings out the best and worst in people.
I have been practicing as a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist in B.C. for 40 years. I was previously the Senior Psychologist at the Vancouver Health Dept. and the Director of Psychology at VGH (Shaughnessy). I was a consultant to the Family Justice Counselling Service (BC Attorney General) for 10 years and the National Parole Board of Canada. My clients these days see me primarily for parenting and post-separation problems. This can take the form of parenting assessments for the Court, consulting, and Parent Coordination. I am registered to practice in BC. Equally importantly I am a husband, father and grandfather.

Divorce Counsellors
How does therapy for people affected by a divorce work?
Individuals may feel a number of emotions following a divorce, such as shock, guilt, grief, anger, and fear. Therapists offer a non-judgmental space for individuals to talk about what they’ve experienced and process their emotions. Therapists will help clients develop coping strategies. They can also help a client rebuild their sense of self and self-worth and talk about what a happier future might look like.
What’s the most common type of therapy following a divorce?
There are several types of therapy that may be useful for divorce, including cognitive behavioural, acceptance and commitment, solution-focused brief, and mindfulness-based therapies. Many therapy types are talk-therapy based, which is typically the most popular option for individuals dealing with divorce. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a widely-used talk therapy, however, there’s no specific therapy type that’s designed to help people with divorce, and different types will work depending on the person.
When should an individual seek help due to a divorce?
When the feelings of a divorced individual, or an individual going through the process of divorce, begin to disrupt healthy daily functioning, it may be a good time to look into therapy. If a person finds that they are not performing at work due to problems with anxiety or motivation, if they’re no longer seeing friends due to feelings of shame, or if they’re not properly taking care of themselves as a result of depression, speaking to a professional could help.
How do you encourage someone to go to therapy due to a divorce?
It’s helpful to express concern and love for the individual while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Sharing how the individual appears to be suffering, and what effects it has on them or on their children, should be done with compassion and empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.
