My areas of specialties include depression, anxiety, trauma (PTSD), and suicidal ideation.
We all experience change; some alter our lives and functioning significantly. Making healthy adjustments can require skills which you have limited or no experience utilizing. Simply recognizing that you are having some difficulty, can be elusive, but is an essential first step. You may need support and further encouragement to take additional steps towards your healing. As your counselor, I can offer a collaborative and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings about the circumstances which are presenting in your life and support you as you move through your journey.

I work with clients on topics including trauma, anxiety, depression, anger and irritability, suicidal thoughts, emotional abuse, and identity exploration.
In this hectic world, we can go through situations that feel bigger than our ways to cope. When that happens, fears and negative beliefs we picked up in the past feel much heavier, and it's hard to know what to do. I'm here to help you get back to a place that feels good and helps you navigate life with confidence. Whether you want to process what you're going through, heal from the past, feel more in control of your life, or simply feel less anxious or overwhelmed, I will make sure your therapy space is safe, builds off your strengths, and helps you feel more centered (never judged or shamed).

I am active in our community in regard to survivors of suicide loss and prevention.
“What you seek is seeking you.” The mere fact that you are looking for a therapist right now tells me that you are ready to heal. We all go through ups and downs in life, and sometimes we just need someone to listen without fear of judgement. Maybe you’ve experienced trauma, and can’t quite, “get over it.” Perhaps you are showing one side of yourself to the world, but internally dying to be recognized for who you show yourself when nobody is looking. There are so many different reasons as to why you are choosing now to look in the mirror. I can help you see with clarity, with an unbiased, open-minded viewpoint.

I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, stress management, LGBTQIA+ related topics, self-harming behaviors, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, emotion regulation, among others.
I work with children, adolescents, and adults, so you will find that my office consists of many toys and games. I also spend a lot of time at the gym, so I like to advocate for incorporating physical activity into daily routines. Incorporating physical movement in session can be beneficial especially when working with children, but it is not required.

Please know that if you are struggling with troubling intrusive thoughts, self-harm, or suicidal ideation, I will explore these with you with curiosity and compassion, not reactivity.
You deserve to feel seen, heard, and accepted as you are - right now. From there, we can reflect on: what would you like your life to look like 3 months from now, 6 months from now, or in a year? I truly consider it a privilege to walk alongside you as you share your story, uncover and rediscover your strengths, and take steps toward the life you most want. I am not here to fix you, because you are not broken; you are becoming.

I specialize in ADHD, Anxiety and Panic Disorders, Life Transitions, Crisis Intervention and Suicidal Ideation, Parental Support, and Sex and Intimacy Issues.
I received both my bachelor's degree and my master's degree from the University of Iowa. I am currently a licensed LMSW who is working toward independent clinical licensure. While my specialties are ADHD and anxiety and panic disorders, I mainly just enjoy connecting with folks who have identified that therapy might be helpful for them. I like building relationships and getting to know people through the therapeutic lens. While I primarily use CBT, ACT, and DBT, I believe that a safe space wherein someone can be vulnerable and authentic is the strongest foundation for healing.

Now accepting new clients. When we face challenges in life, we go to what has worked in the past. We distract ourselves, distance ourselves, or self-medicate with food, relationships, substances and more. At some point, these methods do more harm than good. Let's work together to identify the ways you cope and find better options. I will create a comfortable and safe environment free from judgment that encourages self-discovery. I have experience helping people with trauma, relationships, self-esteem, body image, substance use, anxiety, depression, OCD, binge eating disorder, suicidal thoughts and more.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
