“Your first choice for the last people who would ever go to therapy.” In my 20+ years of being a Marriage & Family Therapist, I have enjoyed great success with clients who either had unsuccessful experiences with other counsellors or were reluctant to seek help. My clients report that they find me very easy to talk with and say that I excel at making difficult subjects easy to understand.

Drawing heavily on the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model, I encourage clients to become acquainted with their many parts (or aspects) of themselves; some, that may be unconsciously driving them towards ill health, unfulfilling relationships, and/or addictions; others, that have the capacity to heal and transform through an unburdening process.
Are you experiencing inner conflict(s) and/or relationship difficulties? Are you stuck in old belief, thought, emotional, or behaviour patterns that are no longer serving you or your relationships? Are you hoping to heal past traumautic events or overwhelming life experiences? Are you looking for someone to really listen and understand how things inside and out are affecting you? Would you prefer to thrive rather than just survive? I can help with all of that!

Connection with others can be both the most important and the most painful aspect of life. You may feel conflicted: yearning for more rewarding relationships while being repeatedly hurt or disappointed by them. Perhaps you have grown tired of making sacrifices in your family or community without seeming to get anything back in return. Chronic disappointment is important to pay attention to, as it can impact mental, physical, and spiritual health. I am an experienced clinician who can help you identify and process thoughts, feelings and body sensations in order to transform them from depleting to vitalizing.

I am experienced in working with individuals, couples and families. I am very passionate about working with couples. I believe that quality work comes from a good therapeutic relationship, a good connection with the client, when therapy is done from a place of curiosity and respect and meeting clients where they are at emotionally. Therapy can be for anyone, whether your goal is to heal from a toxic relationship, become more self-aware, overcome self-doubt, learn to set healthy boundaries, or connect with your partner or other family members.

During the MMFT program, I gained extensive clinical practice experience at Aurora Family Therapy Centre, working with diverse populations.
I strongly believe that human beings are wired for connection, and that difficulties in relationships (and within people) are almost always the result of misconnection or disconnection. In my work as a therapist, I explore how communication and interaction between people can be improved in order to create or repair those connections. I am a relationship specialist who works with individuals, couples, families, and groups. I am a strong social justice advocate, and I provide a safe and nonjudgmental space in the therapy room.

I aim to help people explore inner and outer worlds as a way to move through where we find ourselves stuck, to heal, grow awareness of self and other, and to live in to our preferred and unique ways of being. Through insight, tears, laughter, curiosity, compassion, and more, these processes involve our imagination, physical body, and emotions to develop relationships between parts of ourselves and wholeness. I work from a perspective informed by Internal Family Systems therapy, interpersonal neurobiology, and depth psychology with a focus on the work of Carl Jung.

Family Therapy Counsellors

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
