I am trained in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Relational-Cultural Theory, EMDR and CPT, to provide therapeutic interventions for anxiety, depression, trauma, couples/marriage, personality disorders, OCD, mood disorders and ADHD.
Around 40% of the effectiveness of therapy is your relationship with your therapist! The next 30% is your own coping skill set. I pride myself in being a down to earth, relatable counselor, and I enjoy collaborating with my clients for their mental health care! With 18 years of well-rounded experience in the field, I use a combination of theories and techniques to first build a trusting and empowering relationship and then work together to reduce the suffering that comes from mental health issues or life's stressors. I believe clients are looking for connection and for a counselor they can relate to, to help with their problems!

If I were a baker or a mechanic, then who I am as a person wouldn't matter, as long as the donuts are good or your car gets fixed. However, with counseling, how you feel about your counselor matters significantly. Being a good fit is a necessity. I hope that this brief narrative gives you an idea of what working with me might look like so that you can make an informed decision if I'd be an appropriate fit for what you need. I value the science behind what we feel and why we feel it. I value humor. I value unconditional regard for those I serve. These are integral to my work.

I am a clinical psychologist able to treat a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, binge eating, emotional eating, eating disorders, and trauma. I also am able to assist with related difficulties, including uncontrollable emotions and weight loss. I've published research in these areas, and as a professor have trained future researchers and clinicians in them as well. All treatments I use are based on strong research to support their effectiveness - including cognitive-behavioral therapies, acceptance and mindfulness-based treatment, dialectical behavior therapy, and exposure therapy.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
