Psychotherapy is a collaborative, exciting endeavor and represents the hope that something new can happen in our lives. I treat individuals suffering from a wide range of problems: anxiety, depression, troubled relationships, marital distress, eating disorders, learning difficulties, ADHD in children and adults, and women with female cancers. I specialize in work with adolescents, college students and young adulthood. I also enjoy working with adults in middle age and with individuals who are struggling with the challenges of aging and loss. Most importantly, I tailor therapy to each person's particular concerns and needs.

Many of us find ourselves confronted with challenges, sadness and/or destructive patterns that require increased self-awareness to overcome. I use a varied approach to address the individual needs of my patients in a compassionate, nonjudgemental, and empathic environment. I have helped people struggling with issues spanning anxiety, depression, eating disorders, transitions, loss, and trauma, among others. We will work together to explore the root of your struggles through guided questions and by challenging prior assumptions.

I am experienced working with adolescents, individual adults, and couples dealing with life problems, including depression, anxiety, loss, eating disorders, and career and relationship issues.
Creating a safe and supportive therapeutic relationship is the first step toward understanding what's standing in the way of greater life satisfaction and emotional well-being. I am interactive and direct in challenging old patterns of viewing oneself, others, and the world so as to make room for more hopeful possibilities. I believe in exploring the impact of the past on the present, yet because insight alone is often not sufficient for bringing about change, I help clients develop the concrete tools necessary to play more productive roles in their own lives.

I work with adults motivated to explore personal growth and identity including relationship conflicts; professional choices; parenting; counseling for those who were addicted but are in remission; eating disorders; grief; and life transitions.
People generally come to therapy when they are experiencing pain, suffering or stagnation and they want to look into the meaning, purpose or direction in their lives. I am a warm, engaging and empathic individual. I aim to provide a safe haven to examine your issues, your concerns, your wishes, dreams, fantasies, fears and frustrations. I believe in the strength of the connection between us to bring about understanding, change and/or, alternatively, acceptance, leading to a fuller, more satisfying life. The psychotherapeutic process is most successful when you feel safe and understood.

I work well with anxiety, depression, relationship and family of origin issues, issues of aging, bereavement, eating disorders and body image issues.
I imagine that you are seeking therapy because you feel depressed or anxious and want to explore what troubles you and why. Maybe you're unhappy at work, or aren't getting along with a partner, or are grieving the loss of someone dear to you. Therapy is a safe place where you can be yourself and open up about the difficulties you're having. Together we will identify how you get in your own way and work to remove the blocks that weigh you down and keep you from achieving your goals and more contentedly living your life.

My specialties include the treatment of depression, anxiety and eating disorders.
My patients come to treatment to open up repressed parts of themselves. Sometimes, my patients are struggling to integrate family backgrounds, religious,or cultural with their lives today. They have often succeeded in their professional lives but feel stuck in their romantic or interpersonal lives. My patients usually bring a curiosity about how their history effects their present lives. They are interested in engaging in a treatment which examines this closely in order to understand why they are feeling blocked and to open up a greater sense of inner freedom in order to live more meaningful and fuller lives.

Further clinical interests include emerging adulthood, parenting issues, career transitions, eating disorders, focusing problems, and obsessive compulsive personalities.
My expertise lies in counseling my patients to master their anxieties, depression, relationship, and vocational struggles. In addition to being a licensed social worker, and psychotherapist on staff at my post-graduate institute for psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I have extensive experience in both the business and fashion worlds and can readily appreciate the difficulties engendered by high-pressure careers. Having worked in competitive environments, I am exquisitely attuned to the many self-esteem vulnerabilities that can inhibit people from achieving their goals.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
