You may be: a teenager confronting challenges such as anxiety, depression, peer comparison, gender identity or sexual orientation; a family that needs support with general discord, parenting a child who is neurodiverse or LGBTQIA; or a woman feeling stuck or lost, managing anxiety or depression post-college, or during pregnancy, postpartum or infertility.
If you’re considering therapy, you may be in a time of stress or transition. My goal is to ease your access to psychotherapy by providing you or your family with confidential online therapy, from the comfort of your own home. While I work with clients of all ages in any stage of life, my specialties include teen and family LGBTQIA issues, prenatal/postpartum challenges, parenting children with special needs and working with women who feel “stuck.”

Mental health therapy for teens. Let’s face it… parenting your teen has left you feeling depleted and confused, wondering what happened to the child you once knew and where you went wrong. You often find yourself worried about their future and whether or not they will have the skills to manage emotions and navigate daily challenges in an uncertain, chaotic world.

I'm Jenn (they/them), a Brooklyn native with Bajan roots, who identifies as Queer. I am passionate about working with Black, LGBTQ+, and grieving communities. I believe one of the most important parts of therapy is the therapeutic relationship. I center my practice around the pillar that we are well-equipped with the things we need to heal and that therapy as a practice allows these things to surface and be used to our benefit.

As a Latino Queer Therapist, I have learned that understanding the intersections of my identities and how I show up in multiple spaces has been imperative to my personal growth and my understanding of belonging.  Growing up, I always felt othered and often times unwanted. Therapy for me is about learning to understand our inner dialogues, validate our emotional experiences, and effect change in a way that is consistent with our desired narrative.

My approach is geared towards helping clients make choices and relate to others in ways that reinforce their feelings of autonomy, fulfillment, and peace. We engage to explore current situations and the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and then develop strategies to help better manage situations or make decisions. Strategies we explore may include short term action plans as well as longer term resilience building to manage ongoing challenges. I will work with clients to develop new ways of interpreting difficulties, understanding others, and communicating that are in line with their own values and hopes.

Teen Therapists

What does therapy for teenagers look like?

When a therapist works with a teenager, the pair will talk about what the teen is struggling with and explore solutions, which may involve interpersonal skills, coping strategies, medication, or lifestyle changes related to sleep, diet, and exercise. Different therapists employ different modalities, but most involve a combination of conversation and skill building.

How long does therapy for teenagers generally take to work?

There’s variability in teenagers’ experiences and challenges; some may begin to improve from therapy within a few weeks while others may take several months or longer. Teens can discuss their progress with their therapist periodically to assess how they’re improving and any changes to the treatment plan that could potentially accelerate that progress.

How do you encourage a teenager to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express your concern and love while framing therapy as an opportunity to explore a tool that could help improve their life; just like they practice baseball or dance, now they can practice their emotional skills. Give your teen control over the process where you can—maybe by weighing in on choice of therapist and signaling that therapy involves confidentiality, so a parent need not know all that is discussed in sessions.

How do you prepare teens for therapy?

You can prepare your teenager for therapy by describing what the process will look like and setting expectations for timeline, if requested. You can explain that the first session may begin with an assessment phase, that they can describe their experiences but that the therapist will ask questions too, and that it may take time to feel comfortable opening up. Ask how they’re feeling about the process and answer any questions calmly and supportively.
