My passion for therapy comes from seeing family members, friends, and peers go through life transitions and hardships. We all have dark days, and sometimes we need someone to hold the candle for us when we have lost the will to hold it for ourselves. Our values, beliefs, culture, and life experiences make us who we are. When those initial beliefs no longer work to maintain our daily lives, we begin to feel stuck. I can provide a calming, safe space to help you get unstuck, and become a better version of yourself.

Are you feeling stressed, defeated, or overwhelmed? Sometimes, we find ourselves feeling “stuck” and unable to move forward—or in any direction. Feeling as if you’re going nowhere, despite energy output, can be discouraging and defeating. Trust me, I understand. Everyone encounters challenging times in their lives. I think we can all agree that you never know what life will throw at you. The journey to healing can be lonely; but I am here to walk with you every step of the way. I can assure you that I will provide a safe place for you to express yourself, free from judgement.

Do you feel like you are in the same relationships all the time no matter who you are with? Perhaps experiencing attachment to unhealthy patterns and/or people? Maybe you had an unpleasant medical experience and now fear care. Perhaps you look in the mirror and don't feel your best. Maybe you have difficulty saying "no" and lean towards "people-pleasing" tendencies. Because people would be mad at you, right? Do you have difficulty with boundaries? Maybe some FOMO or isolating in your sweats watching Netflix but you want more social interactions? If you answered yes to any or all of these, you are in the right place!

I started my career as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry, working and leading teams for the International Space Station and a satellite mission. Wanting to work more closely with people, I switched to business strategy consulting, traveling to Fortune 100 companies on a weekly basis for two years. While I got the chance to solve complex problems, I realized I wanted to help people solve the problems that mattered to them at a deeper level. This, coupled with my own recovery journey, is what drives me to do exceptional therapy work today.

My practice serves primarily adults and focuses on those seeking assistance with issues surrounding substance abuse and dependence, LGBTQ issues, divorce, grief and loss, trauma/crisis as well as overall life developmental transitions. But, you may be asking, "how could you possibly understand me?" Great question, and after years of self searching and development I too found myself at the crossroad of change and sought therapy, that's life. Regardless the issue, you can work through it and I am here to help you.

My approach to wellness is holistic and considers not just what may be happening in your own life but how the relationships with those you love and others around may be impacting you. Even when working with individuals, I believe it’s important to understand the impact of the interactions between you and others. During my career as a therapist, I have worked with people in many different circumstances: couples seeking premarital or relationship counseling, medical patients experiencing chronic pain or illness, families of adolescents in the juvenile justice system, and people seeking personal growth, or empowerment.

Not accepting new clients
As a young child, Lisette knew that she was called to "help others." Therefore, she decided to pursue something in the human service field. She graduated in 2004, with her BS in psychology from University of North Carolina at Pembroke. In 2009, she received her MSW from Fayetteville State University. Lisette believes that "Understanding the human spirit is the most important aspect to helping others." Building a therapeutic relationship with your client is a must! Empowerment is a major role that both client and therapist must display. If you believe in yourself, others will believe in you as well. That energy is undeniable!

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
