I can't get my life together - something I hear every day from clients. Having ADHD and trauma can feel like a gut punch. It makes everything confusing and frustrating. Friendships, romances, work situations, all of them feel just so...overwhelming and exhausting. It feels easier to be alone in your off time because there are no weird social rules that you don't know to manage. You also don't have to feel on edge every moment because you're going to do or say the wrong thing. But being alone just makes you feel, well, lonely. Feeling like a failure every minute, then people pleasing and masking, it's all just too much.

Clients who reach out to me are either their worst critic, ready and willing but may lack particular skills, or both. Self-acceptance is a needed foundation. It is important for people to learn to accept themselves and their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors, making room for being uncomfortable; while also learning to regulate or change behaviors when it is needed to do so. Whether the issue is depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, emotion dysregulation, trauma/PTSD, ADHD, or substance use, I have a set of skills that will be helpful.

I work in the treatment of anxiety, depression, social skills, difficulties with transitions, work/school stress, ADHD, and utilize Brainspotting for trauma.
The everyday stressors of life can become overwhelming. Emotions and behaviors often are too much and it feels like what has worked before isn't working anymore. As your therapist, you and I will seek to discover attainable goals, strive after a healthier, more grounded sense of self, and work towards finding a more fulfilling and hopeful future. I would be honored to help you manage whatever life throws your way. Life is hard, but it doesn't have to be. Together, we will discover the root of the problem and face it head-on. You don't have to be alone in this anymore. Allow me (and my in-office service dog ZIGGY) to help.

Putting your mental health as a priority can be a challenge. We all have many responsibilities that take up our time and attention. Maybe you’re a parent dealing with the daily tasks and grind of your family. Or perhaps you’re someone who has been feeling anxious and triggered by your partner because of the stressors of your job. If you have ever felt like life is a slippery slope and you’re losing your grip, you are not alone! I specialize in relationships. It can be the relationship you have with your family, or the one you have with yourself. Maybe it’s even the relationship you have with work.

Life often does not turn out as hoped for or expected. It can be difficult to navigate amidst feelings of isolation, sadness, anxiety, and grief. Relationships often suffer as a result of life stressors and the baggage we all bring into them from our own experiences. People want to feel lighter, healthier, and happier which can be achieved through a variety of tools and interventions. Through a combination of both experiential and cognitive approaches, therapy can help to ease the weight of tough times and instill hope and change.

Bridging the potential within, along with opening our hearts and minds to all of life's possibilities is the underlying focus of my practice. I believe that therapy is a collaborative one with the client in which strengths within are identified, and assistance is given to help the person find their own inner solutions. Optimal growth and change is achieved by identifying and breaking down those obstacles that stand in the way of a persons true happiness and potential.

It is an honor for me to have the opportunity to help others work through personal, relationship and other life issues by way of developing a strong therapeutic relationship. My primary goal in therapy is to establish and maintain a safe, trusting and accepting environment. I work from primarily ACT and DBT frameworks. Both of these therapies use Mindfulness strategies and other skills to "get you out of your head" and into living life to the fullest. Mental health and physical health are intimately intertwined. I often incorporate mind-body connection practices into treatment. Combining these techniques can elicit powerful change.

I have had good success with working with the resolution of depression and anxiety with clients for over 35 years. I work with people who are trying to improve their marriage or reluctantly must decide another direction. Sometimes men are ambivalent about trusting therapy. While the national norm is that therapist caseloads are 70/30 % women more than men, my norm is an even split between men and women. Men do find they can make headway on stubborn relational or emotional issues. I also see adolescent boys as they make their transition into young manhood.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
