Clients are welcomed into my space wherever they are in terms of understanding, self-awareness, and managing difficult emotions. Sessions focus on the 'here and now' while also exploring historical issues being triggered and mis-managed. We confront irrational thinking and work to re-script the less-than-helpful language around feeling 'not good enough,' 'broken,' or 'lost.' Ultimately, clients can expect to focus on their core issues and will, in the process, come to feel genuinely known, accepted, and not so alone in the process of their lives.

Please go to my website at www.RickBoyesCounseling.com for more information. A great deal of my work has been with adults who were abused as children. Sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in childhood can greatly limit the degree to which one can function fully and find fulfilling relationships. I have an endless amount of compassion for the pain that life can bring and a tremendous amount of respect for the courage that it takes to look honestly at ourselves.

There are times in our lives when we just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel. We often feel overwhelmed in our relationships, not knowing what to do to make them better. As your therapist, I can be there to provide compassion, insight, and suggestions that can help you move in the direction you want to go. I believe that therapy can help individuals, couples, and families develop the skills needed to help you achieve your goals.

Much of my focus is working with men struggling with what it means to be a man in today’s world. I also focus on clients experiencing the anxiety of transitioning out of a restrictive and domineering faith, hoping to embrace a more secular way of life - with an emphasis on ex-LDS. I work with clients experiencing difficulties in their primary relationships surrounding intimacy, vulnerability and codependence. Similarly, I have experience working with people struggling with their own relationship to sex, sexuality and sexual identity. I have significant experience working with people struggling with alcohol and drug addiction.

If you are struggling to communicate with a partner/loved one, repeatedly feel misunderstood or unable to meet each others' different emotional needs, you're likely left feeling frustrated, discouraged, even hopeless at times. You may be thinking, "Are we just too different from one another?" "Are we fundamentally incompatible?" Barring certain severe or egregious issues, my answer is usually: No, it's probably not that you're incompatible. But you may need a different level of understanding of yourself and your partner and different set of skills and strategies to break out of the current negative cycle.

The therapeutic relationship is built on being genuine, nonjudgmental, and providing a warm safe environment where change can begin.
As a member of the LGBTQ+ community I invite you to be courageous and work to start your journey towards becoming your authentic self. Gaining insight into your life can be a complicated process. Most people experience challenging times when dealing with change. Harriet Lerner once said, "What will never change is the will to change and the fear of change. It is the will to change that motivates us to seek help. It is the fear of change that motivates us to resist the very help we seek." If you are feeling a need for change in your life, I invite you to start the process of therapy to change your direction in life.

I believe that the most rewarding things in life are the relationships that we build with others. As a systemic therapist, I believe that nothing exists in isolation. Healing, therefore, occurs when changes are made at the individual and systemic levels. I believe that there is a reason for every struggle and that our struggles give us purpose. I strive to tailor treatment to meet your needs and so treatment will look a little different for everyone.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
