Abbe Horsburgh focuses primarily on helping patients with anxiety, depression, self harm, loss, and problems with relationships (of all kinds). She works mostly with individuals, but also with families, where conflicts, misunderstandings, and hurtful acts, whether past or present, often create distance and painful cutoffs. She is empathetic and patient, but also, where necessary, goal-oriented and pro-active.

I don't do 10-15 minute med checks because I don't believe you can properly prescribe medication if you don't understand what is going on with the patient. History is everything in psychiatry and studies consistently show that therapy plus medication works better than either one alone. I use a biopsychosocial approach and treat the whole patient, and coordinate care with other providers. I also do home visits for homebound patients on Mondays and Fridays. I was profiled in the American Psychiatric Nurses Association national newsletter March 2012 issue.

I've worked over 35 years with individuals, groups, couples and families, and throughout this time I created a specific set of Tools for Life for getting through life's stressors. These tools are a set of extremely effective methods, visuals and practices that our clients (children, teens and adults) can use immediately, and into the future to handle many life's challenges. I specialize in pain management, and alternative dispute resolution. Teletherapy video sessions offered for convenience.

I am a psychotherapist: more specifically, a psychologist and a psychoanalyst. I have seen hundreds and hundreds of patients over the course of my forty plus year career. Every one of them has a story to tell, a story that despite its often gut-wrentching pain is beautiful, both in its uniqueness and its complexity. It is a story that the person may never have dared to tell before finding the safety of my office, perhaps feeling too inconsequential or guilty or ashamed.

This summer marks 35 years that I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with children and families in Boca Raton and the surrounding areas. Having grown up in Boston and trained at Boston University and Massachusetts General Hospital I need to disclose I am still a Red Sox fan. My expertise lies in rendering therapy to children and families and consulting with parents to help them make sense of and deal with the myriad of challenges that our children present. I do not conduct conduct Psychological/Educational Evaluations so if necessary I will refer families to our local experts.

Welcome! I would like to commend you for starting, or continuing, your process of therapy/counseling/coaching, as it takes much courage to look in the mirror and create awareness and change. People come into therapy for a wide array of reasons and concerns. In addition to psychological issues, counseling can also be helpful for those who are looking to foster personal/professional growth, and also to provide a safe/objective place to talk. Whatever your reasons, I promise to meet you where you are and help you in your process of exploration, healing, growth, realization, and change. I look forward to working with you.

Life has shown me we do not have control over all situations in our lives, but finding meaning and purpose in these experiences can provide a framework for personal growth and development. I attempt to empower others to safely explore their thoughts and feelings, to understand the root of their problems, and to experience a higher self-awareness and self-acceptance. I treat Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar DO, OCD, PTSD, and Panic DO. I accept Aetna, Cigna, Oscar, United Healthcare and Medicare. I am currently credentialing with BCBS and Humana and can provide visits virtually for ease, safety and comfort.

I specialize in many areas, some of which include chronic illness, OCD, phobias, and grief/loss to name a few.
Recently having moved to Delray Beach after spending over a decade and working in a children's hospital for 10 years prior to that, I decided to become part of a practice that utilizes a holistic approach to mental health. Using an eclectic approach allows me to tailor treatment and intervention to each client’s needs to support growth and personal development. It is rewarding helping clients go from dependence to greater self-efficacy as they develop the skills needed to navigate life’s challenges. I use evidence-based treatments to facilitate positive change.

Are you looking for someone to see you through a difficult time? Look no further. One reaches a point in life when they need to talk to a professional. You are not alone. It is completely understandable to have a need to reach out to a professional when life circumstances get difficult. You may be looking for someone you can to talk to or who listens to you and who can be objective. I am trained to listen, empathize, and construct goals for overcoming your difficulties. I provide a relaxed and comfortable setting and pride myself on helping people overcome.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
