My goal is to provide a safe space in which to learn coping skills, heal or to find solutions to a life issue. You may not need "healing" but just someone to help with your partner, children, parents, work, or other areas that can be difficult. I will meet you where you are emotionally and together we will work on the plan to meet your goals. I want you to put your feet on my couch, bring your dog and be comfortable. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Certified Clinical Mental Heath Counselor and a Certified Hypnotherapist. If you want to stay in the comfort of your own space, I am also a Certified Distance Counselor.

Hi. Welcome to my Grow professional profile! Do you ever wonder, "What is going on."? If your inner dialogue is saying, "Yes that's me, exactly, finally somebody who gets it!" I believe that nobody actually has it all together, but that there are those that pretend like they have it all together but inside feel like an imposter making it day by day and those that don't pretend and are also making it day by day. I enthusiastically invite both those who are high functioning and those who are not functioning persons seeking to improve their overall wellbeing.

I believe one of the most valuable experiences someone can have in their life is to be truly heard. You may find me well-suited to helping you as I'm calm, empathic and nonjudgmental -- people have told me. I treat clients who struggle with anxiety, depression and relationship problems among other difficulties. In the past few years, my skills and knowledge have been deepened in particular by discovering that our connection to others is a survival need--and a key source of difficulties. Connection is an essential source of healing and growth.

I strongly believe in treating the person as a unique person given their individual needs. I primarily practice cognitive-behavior therapy utilizing an eclectic style and often use anecdotes, paradoxes, and especially humor in order to enhance, educate, and assist in reaching each person's goals. I have a specialty in treating Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorders, and Anxiety. While I specialize in treating those suffering OCD, Panic, and Anxiety, I am equally proud of the successes I've had in helping those with Adjustment Disorders, Stress Management, Depression, Relationship Difficulties, and Family Concerns.

So many of us feel stuck-tangled in painful memories, uncomfortable emotions or self-criticism. I offer mindfulness-based psychotherapy that can help you live with awareness, vitality and purpose. I work with people struggling with anxiety, depression, stress, loss and relationship difficulties who are ready to try a different approach. Rather than just feeling better, my focus is on helping you live better and meet life's challenges with greater ease. It is a joy and privilege to work with others as they let go of the struggle, clarify what is truly important and bring forth this vision into reality.

Congratulations on embarking upon the next step in your journey! Each of these steps — every experience of bliss, fear, frustration, or sorrow — have all lead you to this very moment. The challenges and complexities of your day-to-day life may have lead you here. The traumas, losses, and heartaches of the past have, too. And while I would rather that each of us would be spared these experiences — it is my hope that I may have a chance to partner alongside you as you grow and, ideally, heal from each of them.

I graduated from Yale and then got my MD from Medical University of South Carolina. I completed my psychiatry residency at UNC Chapel Hill and worked in mental health clinics and later as Director of Psychiatry at Person Memorial Hospital. I enjoyed medication management but became most excited about the long lasting effects of psychotherapy. I have a great deal of experience caring for individuals with a wide variety of emotional and behavioral issues and I now want to focus my knowledge and insights on treating these issues with psychotherapy.

Obsessive-Compulsive (OCD) Therapists

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
