Kessler Bickford, Counselor in Easton
“The tools we use to avoid emotional pain are called defenses. They work brilliantly--but only briefly. Eventually they make us sick because they block emotions from escaping. But how can you stop what's unconscious? That's where you and I come in. Together we can uncover damaging defenses. Turn against them. Finally give pain an unblocked exit. And begin the business of healing. Once and for all.

Halina Burns, Psychologist in Easton
“People consider seeing a psychologist for many reasons. They may be experiencing anxiety or depression. Perhaps they have suffered the loss of a loved one, a marriage, or a job. It may be difficult to get over something that has happened in the past. Physical pain, illness or disability can be difficult to get through. Sometimes the use of drugs or alcohol to get over one problem has now become the problem. People may also come to a psychologist, not because of a specific problem, but just because they feel their lives could be better, happier, and more meaningful. These are valid concerns.

“Most of us have times in our lives where we feel completely overwhelmed, outnumbered and alone. We've tried to change, but we're still struggling. We know we can't stay in this place, it's too painful, but how do we ask for help? Perhaps it's the stigma, perhaps we've tried other therapists, perhaps we just can't make the call. But there's a reason you're on this site. I'm here to encourage you to make the call, whether it's to me or someone else. You do deserve to feel better!

“Everybody comes to therapy to “get better.” In most cases, at least in the short run, they do – if only from the placebo effect. But when one’s symptoms of depression, anxiety, or PTSD are a consequence of psychological trauma, talk therapy - which IS helpful for problem-solving, gaining new perspectives, sorting out relationship difficulties, etc. - rarely resolves them. Fortunately, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), both research and my own long experience with it show, DOES help resolve symptoms resulting from trauma – and often rapidly. After significant trauma work, people not infrequently report the experience has been life-changing.
