AMERIGROUP Therapists in Philadelphia

Seeds of Hope Eating Disorder Program, Treatment Facility in Philadelphia
“Seeds of Hope is an Intensive Outpatient Program specializing in the treatment of eating disorders. It offers support and direction for individuals in crisis or struggling to function on a regular basis. It is often an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or can be a transition for individuals being discharge from an inpatient stay. We treat clients in the least restrictive environment which allows many to maintain their daily life and routine. Our staff consists of Licensed Professional Counselors and Nutritionists and Dietitians who specialize in the treatment of eating disorders. Clients are supported three times a week by using a multimodal approach consisting of Process Group Therapy, Expressive Art Therapy and Educational Nutrition Therapy. These groups reduce isolation and secrecy, help identify and express feelings, and develop more effective ways of coping. A therapeutic meal is included which our clients make at home and eat together with our staff. Our group maintains a small group census to ensure optimum therapeutic support.

“People enter therapy because they want to improve something in their lives. Often the timing of this choice to seek therapy is not ideal - you may be having family or work stress, you may be depressed, anxious, tired and unable to think clearly or make decisions. At these times you need a therapist who is well respected, thoughtful, and capable. I am a licensed Psychologist who has been in private practice in Center City, Philadelphia for over 25 years. I work with adults and young adults (16 years +) facing emotional, interpersonal, career and medical challenges.

Mark D Schenker, Psychologist in Philadelphia
“The primary focus of my practice for the past 20-some years has been helping people achieve recovery from substance abuse. I use a collaborative, motivational approach, rather than confrontation, and work with people on setting and achieving realistic and healthy goals for their problems. I believe, (as did Bill Wilson, the founder of AA) that there are many paths to recovery; each person must work on a program that reflects their unique needs and assets. I encourage people to explore their resources, their obstacles and their values in setting goals and in working a positive program.

“Searching for a therapist can be overwhelming! However itís an important first step to making the changes that you want to make. Take a look at my website for further information and if it sounds right for you, let's schedule a consultation and see if we are a good fit. In a nutshell, I believe life is a learning process and at times during this process we encounter difficulties. It's by exploring these difficulties, events that happen in life or the repeated mistakes that we make that we better understand ourselves, others around us and can feel happier.

“In my perspective, therapy is a joint venture. Together we will build a shared space to explore your story. In a safe and nonjudgmental environment, we can gain increased understanding of your history, feelings and dynamics in relationships. This awareness can help create changes in your current situation. My process involves first getting to know you and taking a flexible therapeutic approach to best fit your individual personality. As we construct a secure relationship in therapy, I often find that my clients become more comfortable in other close relationships as well.

“Are you feeling stuck and/or unhappy at work? Using food to cope with stress? Struggling with a relationship? Using experiential techniques beyond basic "talk therapy," I create a safe space helping clients heal and remove the blocks that are keeping them from living a joy-filled life. This approach supported me in my own process of healing from depression and an eating disorder. I now feel committed to sharing these techniques with my clients, which I have been happily doing for over 15 years. I specialize in: Relationship Issues, Depression, Food/Weight Issues, Anxiety and the LGBTQ Community.

I believe that therapy can help us to have more fulfilling and meaningful lives. “I work comfortably with people from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds, and people within the LGBTQ community. In my practice I see adults, adolescents, and couples. I have a direct, interpersonal style in which I support and assist individuals in meeting their personal goals while helping them to process past and present issues related to trauma, child abuse/neglect, addiction(s), grief and loss, depression, or anxiety that may be interfering with their progress. I approach my clinical practice from a socially conscious perspective, working always to view personal difficulties within the sociocultural context in which we live.

“"The truth will set you free"... I became a therapist because I believe that through relationship, listening, and talking, a tremendous amount of healing can take place in a person's life. I believe in people and the potential for change and growth in their lives. I see therapy as a partnership in facilitating that change. I help people to free themselves from various things that hold them down, guilt, anger, shame, addictions, anxiety... I attempt to help people establish a more solid foundation of self worth, balance, love and flexibility to be able to negotiate the world, their relationships and themselves more successfully.
