My goal is to help you uncover your true potential and lead a life that is worth celebrating. While we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can work together to better understand and resolve challenges in your life. By applying complementary therapy approaches and techniques, we will unearth long-standing behavior patterns and negative perceptions that may be holding you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

Let’s start off by normalizing how scary and vulnerable reaching out for help can be, especially if this is your first time seeking therapy. We get it, so we strive to create a safe atmosphere where personal challenges can be overcome and fulfilling relationships and lives can be created. Let’s also normalize the concerns you may be having because experiencing any sort of emotional distress can often leave us feeling alone. We can help you understand and address anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, life adjustments, sexual concerns, relationship concerns and even more so the less noticed, unspoken challenges that come within them:

My name is Teresa Maguire, and I have been a psychotherapist (LCSW-R) for 25 years. I work primarily with adults dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma, life transitions, gender identity concerns, relationship problems, and LGBTQ issues. I work mainly from a psychodynamic and relational model, utilizing Attachment-based, Eclectic, Psychodynamic, Person-Centered, and Trauma Focused therapies. I believe those therapeutic relationships are the most important vehicle for facilitating positive change and growth.

I believe in searching for the resilience in each person. Beginning therapy can feel like entering unknown territory. I have a warm, interactive practice that includes the following: problematic life changes, depression, adoption issues (both child and adult), work issues, social competence, relationship issues, recovery issues, trauma, anxiety and aging issues. I have a special feeling for those who are dealing with anxiety, and use meditation frequently. I am also able to assist with creative blocks regarding writing and other arts.

I believe every dysfunction, every disorder, and every pain was somehow born to cope with life and protect the best parts of us. In the journey towards healing, we all need a power greater than ourselves (call it God, love, or family...) to provide acceptance, support, and a safe place to unravel. Counseling is an invitation to come and be; to take an honest look at yourself for who and what you really are; to realize your issues make sense; and to have compassion for all parts of you so you can holistically heal and function at your full potential.

A successful therapeutic relationship will be supportive, empowering, positive, but also difficult, at times uncomfortable, and often challenging. We rarely find ourselves seeking therapy when everything is comfortable and going well; instead, we are feeling helpless, unlovable, angry, isolated, and stuck in situations without solutions. Things that once made sense no longer do, we are confused, fearful, and just want to feel better. Imagine not feeling so afraid, understanding how/where your thoughts come from, or just simply being able to be happy; these are the expectations of our work together.

My primary goal is to encompass a therapeutic setting defined by safety, transparency, and authenticity. If you’ve been experiencing feelings of low self worth, anxiety, and want to better your social and romantic relationships, you are not alone. Many people feel that exact same way, and that is why I am dedicated to establishing an environment where my clients not only have their voices heard, but are also deeply understood. Throughout each session I will place a strong emphasis on respecting your individuality, and acknowledge your wide range of experiences, viewpoints, and values that shape your distinct identity.

Congratulations in taking the first step towards desiring a healthier, happier and more satisfying life. If you or a member of your family is experiencing unsatisfying relationships, difficulty in school or work, anxiety, sadness, etc then I welcome the opportunity to help. In my 10+ years of practice I find that I am a believer in early prevention. I believe the stereotypical image of therapy is outdated and instead I believe it helps promote positive change and growth and helps facilitate people in having more satisfying relationships and lives.

There may be times in your life when you feel that the burden of your problems is interfering with a relationship, work, or in general with the quality of your life. Depression, anxiety, a loss, a problem in your past, or perhaps an unknown cause results in distress. A person can enter psychotherapy to find out how to deal with these problems and emotions more effectively. Asking for help can be easy or hard but talking to a caring professional can be the first step to alleviating a variety of problems.

Depression Therapists

What is the goal of therapy for depression?

Therapy for depression has several major goals. One is to relieve the mental pain of depression, which distorts feeling and thinking so that sufferers cannot see beyond their current state of mind or envision feeling better. Another is to give people the mental tools to recognize and correct the kinds of distorted thinking that turn a problem into a catastrophe and lead to despair. Therapy also teaches people how to process negative emotions in constructive ways, so they have more control over their own emotional reactivity. And it helps people regain the ability to see themselves positively, the motivation to do things, and the capacity for pleasure.

What happens in therapy for depression?

Perhaps most important, no matter the type of therapy, patients form an alliance with the therapist; that connection is therapeutic in itself, plus it becomes an instrument of change. Patients learn to identify and to challenge their own erroneous beliefs and thoughts that amplify the effects of negative experiences. They learn to identify situations in which they are especially vulnerable. And they learn new patterns of thinking and behaving. They may be given “homework” assignments in which they practice their developing skills. In addition, good therapists regularly monitor patients to assess whether and how much the condition is improving.

What therapy types help with depression?

Several types of short-term therapy have been found effective, each targeting one or more areas of dysfunction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps clients challenge their negative thoughts and beliefs, learn new behavioral strategies, and curb reactivity to distressing situations. Behavioral activation (BA) is a form of therapy often used in conjunction with CBT; it focuses on engagement in rewarding activity as a pathway to changing negative feelings and disturbed mood. Another widely used approach is interpersonal therapy (IPT), which targets the social difficulties that both give rise to and get exacerbated by depression. Therapists may combine approaches as needed.

Can therapy for depression be done online?

Studies have found that online therapy can be highly effective for treating depression, although it may be more challenging to build a good therapist-patient alliance on screen than in person—at least at first. However, online therapy can offer considerable advantages. Accessibility and convenience are tops among them. Some people actually find it easier to talk about problems online than in person. While online therapy typically limits visibility of facial expression and body gestures that give important nonverbal cues to a patient’s state of mind, it can give therapists a glimpse into a patient’s world and life, providing information that can be highly useful in guiding therapy.

How effective is therapy for depression?

Many studies show that therapy is highly effective provided that patients complete the prescribed course of therapy, commonly 16 to 20 sessions. Over the long term, it is more effective than medication and the effects are more enduring. As a result, psychotherapy has the power not just to relieve current suffering but to prevent future episodes of the disorder. Therapy reverses the dysfunction in neural circuitry that disposes individuals to a negative view of themselves, the world, and their future and they acquire coping techniques, problem-solving skills, and understanding of their own vulnerabilities that are useful over the course of a lifetime.
