I’ve been in the mental health field for over 25 years and take a relational approach considering the individual, environment, life experiences, personality, needs and strengths of each person. I enjoy supporting adults, children and families improve communication skills, self awareness, acceptance, and learn adaptive ways to regulate/ manage emotions and behaviors. We will work together to increase insight and awareness and you or your child's overall functioning, and reduce problematic symptoms/behaviors. My clients have expressed feeling safe and accepted and often share appreciating the depth of our work together.

I am a LCSW, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and LMFT, Licensed Marriage and Family Counselor, and have been in practice for over 30 years. I hold a MA degree in Social Science from the University of Chicago, and a MSW in Clinical Social Work from the University of Denver. I have served as president of the National Association of Social Workers, Montana Chapter, and on several national NASW committees. After serving as director of the local mental health center and teaching part time in the Sociology Department at Carroll College, I started my own private practice: Adult and Child Counseling Service.

My journey into becoming a therapist began well before I was born with the inheritance of generational family mental health issues. As a teenager, I was drawn to art making as a means of processing difficulties I was experiencing and did not have the verbal understanding nor support system to address. I pursued a career in the arts through university and apprenticeships but was not fully satisfied and needed more internal investigation for what connection I was having with art and my psyche. I studied anthropology, took classes in psychology, and was exposed to indigenous healing methods. Eventually, I discovered art therapy.

I enjoy helping children overcome and heal from life's challenges. I believe that teamwork with parents is critical to kid's healing and healthy development. With over 25 years of professional experience, I specialize in treating children ages 2-18. I offer effective evidence based treatment for early childhood through adolescence. Children's stumbling blocks can be rooted in divorce, learning or developmental disabilities, loss, grief, behavioral difficulties, trauma, abuse, depression, anxiety and academic struggles. Counseling can help turn these struggles into valuable life experience and increased confidence.

Sometimes life gets the best of us, and we find ourselves lacking the meaning and fulfilment in life we deeply desire. The pain that is real and upsetting may be within yourself or within other relationships. Additionally, you may find you lose yourself in the daunting role as a caregiver of a child, a spouse, a parent, or a friend. You deserve to be seen, heard, and understood, with unconditional positive regard to get support and healing that align with your values toward a life of meaning and fulfilment and that considers the uniqueness of your story.

My top priority is to provide a safe and supportive environment for you. A fundamental aspect of that is hearing and understanding where you are coming from. The most common issues I help with are emotional trauma, relationship difficulties, workplace difficulties and longer term mental health/illness issues. I worked in state government for 15 years. The understanding that I developed regarding how organizations tend to function is valuable in helping clients dealing with workplace issues.

I am a trauma-informed child, teen and family therapist who is deeply committed to empowering my clients with the knowledge and skills they need to heal wholeheartedly. I treat both the brain and the body and believe that all behavior is communication. Often times, the challenging behaviors we see in ourselves and our children reflects underlying neurobiological processes related to trauma, unmet needs, and lagging social-emotional skills. As a therapist, it is an honor to walk alongside you on your path to healing.

As an MFT (Marriage and Family Therapist) Intern, I am supervised by Dr. Darren Adamson (SMFT), Dr. Meg Williams (SMFT), and Terry Spring (LCPC) with Terry Spring Therapy. Along with my education, they provide expert guidance to help me help you.

I have been working with children and families for the past 11 years utilizing a relational attachment model. I have experience working with family separation, foster care/adoption, trauma, life transitions, depression, anxiety, anger, self-esteem issues, school issues along a verity of emotional/behavioral concerns. I have worked with children from age 5-18 years. I offer a safe nonjudgmental environment that allows children and families to be able to address and explore their needs with support and guidance.

In my 30+ years of experience, I have worked in a variety of settings engaging in diverse practice using an eclectic approach with individualized interventions. I believe that individuals have the ability to heal and grow within the context of relationships. I emphasize a framework of building a strong relationship of trust and safety.

Dr. Bütz has been a licensed psychologist for over twenty years, working both in executive management and conducting clinical, forensic and neuropsychological work. During the fall of 2015, Dr. Bütz moved his clinical and neuropsychoogical practice to St. Vincent Healthcare Behavioral Health Associates and maintained his forensic practice under Aspen Practice, P.C.
