Do you constantly feel on edge, overwhelmed or anticipate future events with worry and dread? Do racing, ruminating thoughts impact your ability to concentrate on tasks, manage stress or engage socially? Living with anxiety can be a distressing, frustrating and sometimes frightening experience. You may be preoccupied by "what if" questions about the future that you can't control, causing your thoughts to spiral and fuel more distressing emotions and physical symptoms. The ongoing, looping cycle of anxiety can impact all aspects of your life, including work performance and your relationships.

I believe therapy is a collaborative experience where the participant guides the process at their preferred pace. I have experience working with individuals, couples and families. I aim to provide a non-judgemental space that supports personal growth. I invite all forms of creative expression and the use of symbolism/ metaphors as tools for reflection. I acknowledge that humans have multiple intersectional identities and belong to many systems that may impact their therapeutic exploration. I hope to bring transparency and compassion to each interaction.

The most important relationship we will ever have is the one with ourself. Some clients know what they want to work on, and other times we discover patterns in emotions, behaviors & relationships that take us where we need to go. Many clients I work with are experiencing anxiety, depression, relational trauma, trust issues, low self-esteem, perfectionism, & shame. Others seek support with life transitions, stress management, work/life balance & career transitions. And often, these difficulties can be traced back to childhood or traumatic life experiences, and the self-limiting and negative core beliefs they created.

Throughout our lives, we are taught how to be a good friend, a good family member, and to be kind and considerate to others. Unfortunately, people often are not taught how to be nice to oneself. As a therapist, I strive to assist clients in self-exploration and self-compassion and working towards self-acceptance. The real change starts with us as individuals. Once we start to take care of ourselves, and make those steps towards internal healing, there is a ripple effect towards improving our relationships with others. All parts of us are important, especially those parts of us we want to avoid and reject.

Dialectical Behavior (DBT) Therapists

Who is DBT for?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is designed for people who experience extreme emotional suffering because they lack the skills of emotion regulation and distress tolerance. The basic affliction can underlie a wide range of conditions, from borderline and other personality disorders to PTSD and treatment-resistant anxiety and depression. The therapy is helpful to those whose emotional reactivity is so intense it is disruptive to everyday functioning and leads to frequent crises.

Why do people need DBT?

The ability to regulate emotions is a core psychological skill that enables people to function in life and pay attention to the world outside themselves; it is consistently associated with well-being. DBT is designed to help people learn how to manage and regulate their emotions. Originally developed to treat people with borderline personality disorder whose extreme emotional suffering led to self-harming behavior and suicide attempts, the therapy is now applied to other conditions involving emotion dysregulation, particularly when other treatments have failed.

What happens in DBT?

Individuals meet weekly with their therapist to discuss their experiences relating to moods, behavior, and skills. Using checklists they maintain, they review emotional experiences and positive practices they engage in. The diaries help individuals discern what led up to a specific problem encountered, this is followed by discussion of the consequences of their actions. In addition, individuals may meet in class-like small groups to learn skills such as mindfulness, emotion regulation and distress tolerance.

How long does DBT last?

Because it is intended to establish long-lasting behavioral change among those with persistent problems, DBT is designed to last six months to a year. DBT includes both weekly sessions of individual therapy and weekly skills-training sessions conducted in small groups. Studies of DBT have documented improvement within a year of treatment, particularly in controlling self-harmful behavior; nevertheless, individuals may require therapy for several years.
