“It is not uncommon to feel stuck or confused, unable to resolve a problem or conflict. I integrate empowerment techniques amd evidence based approaches in therapy for substance users seeking abstinence, harm reduction or moderation depending upon the severity of their substance use. Clients are treated with respect, compassion and mindfulness. Each assumes a proactive role to create a unique course of treatment in our collaboration. This approach is geared to empower clients to develop the skills and knowledge (knowledge is power) to make personal choices regarding their own heath and treatment and insights needed to attain their desired goals.

“My thirty-five years of psychoanalytic experience have given me the perspective that people are seeking happiness, meaning, and a sense of accomplishment. However, unresolved conflicts originating in the past and perpetuated in the present prevent us from fulfilling these objectives. My therapeutic intent is to assist you in reaching your personal or relationship goals with more effective ways of engaging. I approach this through an interaction between us that will bring out the significance of your conflicts and a clearer understanding of your life experiences. I provide emotional support without criticizing, demeaning, or finding fault.

Family Center for Bipolar, Treatment Facility in New York
“It is the favorite true story of Igor Galynker, MD, PhD, director of the Family Center for Bipolar. "I met a woman whose husband had bipolar disorder," recounts Dr. Galynker. "She asked her husband's psychiatrist what was happening, and the psychiatrist said 'I can't tell you anything about your husband. Go get your own psychiatrist.' She did. And each of the four children had their own therapist. And they had a family therapist. Now there were seven mental health professionals, all not talking to each other." This encounter is where the idea of a Family Center got its start. The Family Center for Bipolar is dedicated to the compassionate support and treatment of bipolar illness within the context of the family. Bipolar disorder is a chronic diagnosis and preserving family health and stability is an essential part of successful treatment. The clinicians at the Family Center encourage and facilitate open communication between patients and their loved ones throughout the course of treatment. To achieve this, we use the Family-Inclusive Treatment (FIT) model, designed to include family members, partners, and other support-persons at every step of the way on our clients' road to wellness.
