Christine Acquarulo, Counselor in Catonsville
“My goal at CMA Counseling is to give my clients concrete strategies that they can use to address and overcome their issues beyond and long after the counseling session. Within a safe, nurturing environment, I seek to empower clients with tools that they can use in their everyday lives in order to achieve their personal goals. I have more than ten years of experience in clinical psychology, initially in the Baltimore City Public School System and more recently with Johns Hopkins Hospital in the department of Community Psychiatry. I have been in private practice since 2010

Counselor, MA, LCPC, CSAC, CCTP, NCC
“Have you been relying on "quick fixes" like drugs or alcohol to cope with life's ups and downs? Life can be stressful, overwhelming and chaotic at times, and all you want is to disconnect from reality. Most of us were not taught the coping skills we need to navigate life. We continue to engage in old habits that no longer work for us, yet still hope for relief. I can help you manage your pain, anxiety and depression with cognitive behavioral and grounding techniques. I will give you tools and techniques to walk away with in the first session.

“I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and I have been providing psychotherapy and counseling services to adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families, and groups, for over 25 years. I treat each client as an individual; how you think, how you work, and what you believe is important to consider in how to approach your problem. Ava Barron-Shasho, in Owings Mills
“I provide a safe and nurturing environment to help you explore your current situation, understand how your past impacts your present and live a fuller and happier life. If you are contemplating a change or struggling with an issue, you can start making positive changes in your life. I don't believe therapy should add stress to one's life. Often my clients seek out my services when they are feeling overwhelmed and anxious. After this stage has passed, you will start identifying small steps and thought patterns to move you forward.

Amy Jean Heilman, Clinical Social Work/Therapist in Towson

Clinical Social Work/Therapist, LCSW-C
“"All sorrows can be borne if you put them into a story or tell a story about them," writes Isak Dinesen. Each of us has a life story carried in the confines of our heart. Sometimes the sadness, pain or worry of that story becomes overwhelming. Sometimes, as new chapters are written or old ones end, anxiety and/or depression may arise. I believe therapy offers a safe space in which to share that story, to explore themes and patterns, and to utilize individual strengths to cope with anxiety/depression.

Robert Cohen, Psychologist in Baltimore
“A young mother walked into my office crying and expressing her belief that asking for help indicated weakness. I thought to myself, it takes a strong person to ask for help. She had forgotten how strong and important she was. I believe the single most important ingredient in a successful therapy is establishing, nurturing, and maintaining a safe, trusting, and genuine relationship. While making use of psychodynamic and family systems approaches to treatment, I am also flexible in assisting patients in understanding patterns of behavior that may contribute to their conflicts and worries.

Jane Connell, Counselor in Catonsville
“My ideal client is one who is focused on emotional growth and the expansion of self-awareness. I believe in the power of the relationship established between therapist and client and I believe it needs to be authentic and honest first. I believe we have the power to heal ourselves but often times just need to be pointed in the right direction. My style tends to be Insight Oriented; however I frequently combine strategies from the worlds of both Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness Therapy as well. I am a National Certified Counselor through NBCC.

The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt, Treatment Facility in Baltimore
“The Retreat at Sheppard Pratt is a small residential psychotherapy facility for patients seeking a comprehensive evaluation and intensive treatment experience. The Retreat offers a multi-disciplinary treatment approach to a variety of psychiatric conditions that can be treated safely and effectively in a voluntary, unlocked environment. Individualized treatment involves at least five elements: comprehensive diagnostic assessment, psychopharmacological interventions, individual and group psychotherapy (including psychodynamic psychotherapy and dialectical behavior therapy as well as experiential, expressive and movement therapies), and careful discharge planning and after care. Each patient works individually with a psychiatrist who is an expert psychotherapist, and who leads the patient's individual treatment team. Each patient meets for individual psychotherapy three or more hours a week with his or her psychiatrist, and in addition, has individual sessions with family therapists, clinical social workers, art therapists, recreational therapists, and movement therapists. Psychiatrists are integrated into the group therapy programs on The Retreat, co-leading a variety of the groups, from psychodynamics to psychoeducation. They are not simply consultants, but an integral part of the treatment team, lending their high level of expertise and experience to all levels of the patient's treatment.

Patti Cunningham, Counselor in Lutherville
“You know that something must change, and figuring out how to manage that can be challenging, and at times painful. So my approach is both compassionate and practical as we sort out the issues that demand immediate attention, and those to be explored over time. Has something troubling happened recently? Are past issues showing up more in your day-to-day life? Are your relationships what you want them to be? What changes do you see as necessary or desirable, and what are you willing to try?
