Smadar Salzman, MA, MFT, Marriage & Family Therapist in San Francisco
I specialize in the treatment and resolution of Complex Trauma and Developmental Trauma Disorder. These terms refer to chronic or prolonged traumatic events of an interpersonal nature, including childhood neglect or abuse (physical or emotional), domestic violence, sexual abuse and assault, immigration trauma, traumatic loss, vicarious trauma (compassion fatigue), or growing up in a home with mentally ill or substance abusing caregivers. This type of trauma can significantly influence one's ability to manage emotions, to self-soothe, and to connect with others in a secure way.
I view the manifestation of individual trauma symptoms as a lens into the brightest parts of the person. Responses to trauma are adaptive and necessary at the time in order to survive, but become problematic when they interfere with the ability to form satisfying and secure relationships.
As a therapist, my role is to help clients reestablish safety in interpersonal relationships. My approach is steadfast and consistent. I ensure that skills to manage difficult emotions are in place prior to deeper trauma work. I approach trauma survivors from a perspective rooted in optimism, safety, compassion, and respect.
