Fredelyn Calla, LCPC, ATR-BC, Counselor in Wilmette
When one is living with cancer, and for those who love and care for that person, there may be no words that fully express that experience. When there are no words, one can turn to art therapy, which promotes healing and relaxation in a safe environment by regulating emotions, alleviating anxiety, depression, and anger. Research has shown this and an increase in self-confidence, which strengthens coping skills and widens one's support system. For caregivers and loved ones, art therapy can work through loss and anticipatory grief and incorporate self-care and respite from the demands of caregiving.
Besides cancer support, I have worked in dementia care, mental health and domestic violence and learning how such issues affect individuals, families and relationships. I am interested in grief, loss, health, aging and cultural diversity. I enjoy working with couples, families and individuals and utilizing a range of methods, including creative expression.
I want to help those who see me to discover awareness of strengths, weaknesses, and ways to integrate both, for growth and acceptance in many areas of their lives.
