Elizabeth Owen O'Brien, MA, LPC-S, Licensed Professional Counselor in Austin
I like to work with individuals who are seeking insight into why their lives and relationships aren't working, and who are willing to address the obstacles that are keeping them stuck. I believe that the mind and body are intricately connected and that people become depressed, anxious, and physically ill when they repress their anger, fear, shame and resentment. I see depression and anxiety as "wake-up calls," opportunities to address clients' deeper issues. Understanding the client's contexts, particularly family roles, is crucial in helping him or her gain the self-knowledge necessary to move forward.
My practice is influenced by Attachment Theory; the Humanistic, "person-centered" model of Carl Rogers; Erik Erikson's developmental stages; Family Systems Theory; and Existential therapy, particularly the work of Viktor Frankl. Supporting clients in developing emotional intelligence, and taking personal responsibility, is critical to my work.
I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), for clients suffering from both primary and secondary trauma. I am also an LPC-Supervisor. At Austin Counseling Center, we offer LPC counseling interns a counseling office in which to begin their private practices, under our umbrella.
