People seek treatment for individual symptoms or a failing relationship. In individual treatment the loss of control to one's self from symptoms that seem foreign is central. There are techniques that can be taught to maintain self-control, preventing anxiety and/or depression from running the show. These include Cognitive-Behavioral techniques, biofeedback training and varying degrees of mindfulness.
Relationships are best treated with couples counseling since we rarely see ourselves as our "significant others" see us. In couples counseling the highest task is to improve the relationship rather than letting it fester. Thus, conflict resolution and compromise are primary concerns. I try not to sugar coat because this merely perpetuates the problem.
I have an additional interest in athletics. I have coached many years and have worked with athletes in most sports. I believe there are behavioral techniques that may not make one a better athlete but can certainly reduce the tension and frustration that leads to impaired performances.
