Howard S Farkas, PhD, Psychologist in Chicago
I specialize in helping people overcome emotional eating and other unwanted behaviors. You should consider contacting me if you feel that these behaviors have gotten out of control and you feel unable to regain that control - despite knowing exactly what you need to do to change. My approach begins with helping you understand how emotional eating is your way of coping with life's demands. In short, it's a way of allowing yourself to let go, at least in this one area of your life.
Binge eating is a defiant response against feeling controlled. Most often, that control is the perceived pressure to lose weight. By learning more effective coping strategies, you can enhance your sense of autonomy and lessen the self-defeating urge to rebel by eating. Without binge eating, weight loss will follow.
I am currently working on a book about my approach to therapy, called Eight Keys to Ending Emotional Eating, forthcoming from W.W. Norton. More information is available on my website.
