Joseph Anthony Sullivan, MA, LAC, Counselor in Mesa
I believe people are basically good and have an innate desire to seek truth. Once that truth is obtained a true and lasting happiness follows. I believe mental health is the ability to act according to fulfilling this end. Problems arise when we try to create our own happiness in order to cope with difficulties, by seeking or believing in an alternative reality. This belief can originate from a traumatic experience. Slowly, by looking at our past and present experiences and discovering how they effect us today, especially in out relationships, we can obtain this happiness.
I believe everyone has experienced some type of trauma in their past, either on a large or small scale, that effects how we think and behave today. For this reason I am trained in EMDR Therapy. EMDR is a very effective treatment for trauma, anxiety, depression, phobias, addictions, and diverse behavioral disorders.
I am also a Reality Therapy Specialist. Reality Therapy is an approach that concentrates on relationships, responsibility, and personal choices. I have lived in various countries in the world so I am well equipped regarding cultural issues a well as religious issues. I am a practicing Catholic.
