He earned a B.A. in mathematics from Cornell University, an M.A. in religion and counseling from Covenant Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in social work from University of Maryland. He has taught at Chesapeake Theological Seminary and University of Maryland. In 2000 he co-founded CornerStone Institute.
Susan and he have been married 44 years. They have three married children and nine grandchildren, one of whom died at birth. They lead marriage health workshops where couples practice skills and learn perspectives for stronger marriages. He just finished his first book about skills for real conversations.
