Welcome! While finding a new therapist can be daunting, I hope this page can give you the information and encouragement you need as you take this important next step. My passion as a therapist lies in providing a space for you to 1) better understand yourself and your goals, 2) determine what is working for you and what may not be, and 3) feel emboldened to approach life in new and meaningful ways. It is my hope that our time together will help you to release yourself from patterns that have left you feeling stuck, and instead, find the space and freedom to explore what’s most important to you.

Finding a way to live our lives aligned with our goals and values is one of the most meaningful steps we can take to decrease suffering and increase a sense of purpose in our life. Unfortunately, over our lifetime, we may have learned ways to engage with the world which get in the way of our own successes. We may have become stuck in patterned ways of thinking and acting, which become second nature and can be difficult to change without targeted work. This can lead to feeling discouraged or even hopeless.

Hi, my name is Rivers. I’m a psychotherapist who’s primarily influenced by the contemplative, existential, and psychoanalytic movements in psychology. My goal is to cultivate a space where you can feel free to show up exactly as you are in the moment, without censoring yourself for fear of judgement or ridicule. I believe wholeheartedly in what is known in psychoanalysis as “the talking cure.”

There is more to therapeutic work than talk therapy. I hope to guide people towards a functional and aligned way of living that increases enrichment, a sense of accomplishment, and freedom. I feel that everyone deserves the chance to live a fulfilling life and my role is to help facilitate that opportunity with an individualized approach. My ultimate goal is to help people reconnect with themselves in meaningful and sustainable ways. I approach therapeutic work from a humanistic and eclectic lens that integrates multiple counseling theories and modalities - including Yoga Therapy and Psychedelic Assisted Psychotherapy.

Hi, I'm Brynn! I use many therapy modalities such as CBT, DBT, MI, and ACT, and love to include my clients in the process of deciding which to utilize. I love giving clients tangible skills they can take with them and implement outside of session to make daily life feel better. I am also trained in EMDR, a treatment technique that allows individuals to reprocess traumatic events or other distressing experiences so that it no longer causes distress in the present. I have experiences in working with individuals, couples, and families struggling with anxiety, depression, PTSD and trauma, eating disorders, and substance use disorders.

Finding the right therapist is hard—harder than it ought to be. Especially when you’re already struggling. But it’s essential. The person of the therapist, their fit for you, and the therapeutic relationship are all more important to successful therapy than any degree, license, orientation, or even years of experience. Making the call and actually doing therapy is even harder—but worth it. Psychotherapy works. It can be one of the most significant and transformative experiences of your life. It's also a big investment of time, money and effort. I honor your courage and support your commitment to yourself to even consider it.

I approach a client's concerns from a here and now, rapid change perspective. I believe that when we take action to improve ourselves or our circumstances, our attitude and feelings follow suit. I have been in clinical practice for 20 years, and have worked with many types of people and almost every kind of problem. I strive to balance empathy and sensitivity with helping people to move forward in the change process.

For those who have experienced trauma, crisis, loss, hurt, or abuse, seeking help can be one of the hardest steps. But, you don’t have to do it alone. Trauma & loss can take all different forms and sit in our body & mind in a variety of uncomfortable ways. In counseling survivors of sex trafficking, I have encountered difficult stories & complex trauma. After working overseas, I also can understand how hard transitions, grief, & feeling out of place is. I take a trauma-informed & holistic approach. This means incorporating the emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of you while understanding the impact of the past.

Schedule through my website link in my bio today! Before his own private practice, Tim provided mental health and addiction counseling to individuals and groups. Most of his time was spent serving forensic clients, who were state-mandated to inpatient rehabilitation for a history of felony convictions and serious drug use. Many of them had dual diagnoses, meaning they had mental health issues coinciding with their substance use disorders (which is often the case). Tim relied heavily on various counseling theories including Existential Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Narrative Therapy. He became trained in EMDR.

Your stomach's in knots.Your heart races. Everything feels surreal. Stress and anxiety have a nasty way of hijacking your body and holding you hostage. Some days it's all you can do to not curl up in a ball and call in sick. It's exhausting trying to pretend everything's okay when actually, you're always on edge and about to lose it. What's even worse is when no one understands. They tell you to "get over it", "just relax", or "it's all in your head". It's enough to make you want to scream.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Denver?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
