Kym Allison, LPC, ATR-BC, Counselor in Glenwood Springs
I use a client-centered approach that nurtures self discovery & personal growth. This therapy is suited to individuals moving through life transition periods such as divorce, aging, teens, career changes, brain injury, life style changes, emerging self awareness and addiction recovery. I use traditional talk therapy or a combination of talk therapy and art psychotherapy. Using art works around verbal defense mechanisms and intellectualizing that can stall the therapeutic process. The combination of talk and art therapy works well for clients that have not had good progress in traditional talk therapy or feel that they relapse into old thinking or patterns.
If the client chooses to work with visual communication, I use directed art activities designed to facilitate a deeper understanding of present life circumstances, promote deep healing and encourage greater client self awareness and self actualization. I work with the client to find solutions, encourage personal growth and improve life quality.
I also work with children and teens in attachment assessments in response to divorce and blended families. Art psychotherapy provides a safe way to communicate feelings, thoughts, and experiences thought too taboo or frightening. Clients can also express feelings they do not know how to put into words.

Kym Allison's Groups

Dream group

I do dream analysis with adults and teens. I use a Jungian approach encouraging the dreamer to discover their unique dreaming language. Analysis is used to facilitate personal growth. We start with visually recreating the dream followed by discussion. One time individual sessions available or in conjuction with on-going counseling. I also form small dream groups when the opportunity presents itself. Min. 2 Max. 4 people. Groups can be made up of people who know each other, or I place clients who want to work on their dreams but do not want to pay the fee for an individual session.

Brain Injury Support Group

I meet with this support group every third month. Beginning with January. For the year of 2012 we are working on the development of the individual in relationship to the group. This work translates to the individual and his/her relationships outside the group. We are doing interactive group art directives. Group sharing follows art activity. The group meets every month. This is an excellent, very positive support group for anyone living with a brain injury. There is no cost.
