Most of us don't choose to suffer. Most of us are suffering because no one ever taught us that we have a choice not to. If you have ever expressed any stress or sadness from looking in the mirror and telling yourself you "should" lose weight, make more money, or be any different than who you are now, then you are suffering the consequences of distorted thinking, and this is the time to take charge and change.

Feeling alone, confused or overwhelmed? Struggling with an unhealthy relationship or having trouble establishing a fulfilling, intimate one? Feeling stuck, unmotivated, procrastinating, yet realizing that you’re not reaching your personal or professional potentials? Psychotherapy with a trained and experienced professional can provide a safe space to deal with these and many other issues and facilitate change. Often, emotional injuries or trauma from the past impact the present and how we interact with others, talking with a concerned professional is an important part of the healing process.

It can be difficult to access the fulfillment we all deserve when it feels like we are up against a world that does not understand or value us in our entireties. I believe that the space that you and I co-create can serve as a springboard for meaningful processing of this difficulty and—ultimately—the rich, self-determined life you want to live. While centering your experiences, even those that are most challenging, I bring unconditional openness, warmth, and humor.

Life can present myriad difficulties. We may be navigating individual challenges--life transitions, unstable relationships, loneliness, confusion, or career stress. We may also be troubled by the challenges we face collectively, like systemic injustice, our rapidly shifting world, and climate change. A trusted therapist can provide a space for us to express ourselves and can support us through the process of healing.

We are challenged by so much in our lives, whether in our mental and physical health, our relationships and family, our personal identity, our professional and creative pursuits, or our ability to cope with transition and trauma. I believe we all have the capacity to deepen knowledge of our inner selves in order to release painful, confusing experiences and move forward toward reaching our goals. I am committed to creating a supportive space, without judgment, where we can do this work together.

Being an authentic psychotherapist for my clients is crucial towards forging a lasting and useful therapeutic relationship. I am a firm believer that a psychotherapist must understand and work on themselves in order to fully help their clients. I promise that throughout the course of our relationship I will do the best that I can to empathize with and understand you, and consistently adhere to my principles of humility, patience, and inquisitiveness. I will help you to navigate life and address areas of difficulty, trauma, and distress, rather than assessing you in a manner that is clinical or cold.

What matters most to me as a therapist is to create a comforting, non judgmental space for you to articulate and share your deepest hopes, fears, and thoughts. My practice focuses heavily on compassion, empathy, and warmth to help you feel supported in recognizing and verbalizing what matters most to you. As that clarity emerges, I will help you in your steps forward, to build up your self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-care with renewed confidence and strength.

Therapy is a two way street. Not only do you have to put in the effort and work, but you also have to find a therapist who will do the same with you. You need to click with your therapist and find someone who will help you grow. I believe in creating safe spaces for you to be yourself and to be vulnerable.

In our daily lives, we may find ourselves battling feelings of anxiety or depression, or struggling with work or relationship problems. These issues often emerge from ideas we have about ourselves and the world that were established so far in the past that we may not be fully aware of how they can hold us back in our present lives. As debilitating as these distresses can feel, they also have within them the power to reveal unknown aspects of yourself. They can guide you towards realizing unfulfilled hopes, dreams, and passions, if we only know how to listen to the messages that lay with our moments of deepest psychological hardship.

My favorite part of being a therapist is the continuously evolving relationship that I foster with my clients. I love learning about my clients— everything that makes them who they are, from their interests to their cultural influences to their friends and family, and how all of this impacts the way they view the world. I am passionate about assisting clients who suffer from anxiety, OCD, and relationship issues but also enjoy working with clients with a variety of other concerns including addictions, self-esteem, trauma, and more. I provide counseling that is culturally competent and LGBTQ+ affirming.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
