Many of us, at some point in our lives, experience stress, struggle with interpersonal relationships, and question our self-worth. I have extensive experience and enjoy working with individuals who identify as LGBTQ+, experience chronic illness, as well as emerging adults struggling with life transitions through a relational psychodynamic orientation. I believe therapy can provide tremendous relief, increase joy and spontaneity, and allow you to know and experience a deeper sense of yourself. It can be difficult to start therapy. That is why I approach our work together from a place of compassion, genuineness, and authenticity.

Accepting new clients! I specialize in working with young adults, members of the LGBTQI community, folks going through major life transitions, and workers in "helping" professions. I deeply value the therapeutic relationship and often return to the core touch-stones: feel your feelings, strive for a more integrated sense of self, and boundaries.

I work for The Center For Growth, treating everything from mental health to sex and relationship issues. I can help you manage thing like anxiety and depression as we explore and understand complex emotions in a safe space and find healthy and effective ways to express and release those feelings. We can immerse ourselves in exploration of your past as we make connections and gain understanding of how old patterns show up for you today. Or we can focus on the here and now, identifying what behaviors and thoughts are no longer serving you so you can create new goals that support your growth, in whatever way feels right to you.

The people I work with are interested in making real changes in their lives and relationships and are willing to remain committed to the work even when it is most difficult. Typically what brings people in is an awareness that the same issues present over and over again, even if there are not yet words to describe exactly what is happening. Together and collaboratively, we work to make meaning of your experiences and relationships and the thoughts and feelings that accompany them. When you can see your struggles and patterns clearly, change becomes possible.

I will work with you to capitalize on your strengths and help you identify and move beyond unhelpful mental and behavioral patterns lurking in your blind spots. Rather than talk endlessly about your problems, we will instead use various empirically supported techniques to step back from your problems and explore new behavioral and belief options that better correspond to your key goals and values. Then you'll practice these new perspectives and strategies at home in your real life until they feel more natural. **Please phone me first as I do not always have daily email access.

As a therapist I meet you where you are in life and join with you for a time on your journey to self-improvement. On this journey, it is so important to feel heard. Therapy is about being heard and empowering you to use your voice to be the person you want to be and to lead the life you want to lead. I listen deeply as we work together to identify and meet your therapeutic goals. I believe the environment is a part of the whole person that impacts one’s emotional, mental and physical well-being and needs to be considered in therapy. I invite your feedback regarding what is working and not working for you in our therapy sessions.

Every client is unique and presents with specific struggles. Some may have relationship issues, anxiety, depression, or past/present trauma. I tailor my therapeutic approach to the individual needs of the client. However with everyone that I work with, I strive to create a nonjudgmental, warm, and accepting environment so that my clients may feel safe. I have worked with a variety of individuals whose ages ranged from the teens to their 70’s in multiple settings that included a college counseling center, inpatient and outpatient community based mental health centers, and a correctional facility.

Relationships are hard. My goal is to help couples identify the patterns in which they get stuck, the emotional needs underneath their arguments, and what is preventing them from understanding their partners. I utilize strategies that help build mutual trust and emotional safety in order to regulate intense feelings of anxiety, fear, and pain. Couples will learn how to argue fairly, communicate effectively without escalating into blame or criticism, and improve their listening skills. Couples therapy helps create new and sustainable ways of connecting to one another and nourishing the love and respect in their relationships.

My passion is helping clients free themselves from their current symptoms while utilizing powerful techniques for release and recreation. Many of us carry wounds from the past we are not aware of, creating a cycle of repeated patterns often leading to self remorse and shame. Over time this can lead to dysfunctional relationships, health issues and difficulty trusting ourselves. My goal is for my clients to feel empowered in exactly who they are without any hindrance from past memories or relationships. Everyone carries deep wounds, but I believe it is truly possible to overcome them.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Philadelphia?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
