Consistently, I am drawn to work with people who have experienced complex trauma — or the experience of many, often relational wounds that lead to feeling disconnected from oneself. Sometimes this means not knowing how you really feel and frequently putting others needs over your own. Most of my clients are hard-working and want to overcome anxiety and perfectionism. They want more peace, more confidence, and better boundaries. They come to me to learn how to fully embody who they truly are.

As a highly sensitive person who cares about others and the world, you experience more stress, pain, and overwhelm than most. You may be feeling burned out, having trouble setting boundaries with others, or judging yourself for not being able to let go of past hurts. You might not even remember a time things didn’t feel this way. But one thing is for sure: you’re ready for some relief. You’re ready to start prioritizing your own needs. You’re ready to take up space as your authentic self. Most of all, you’re ready to feel more confident and capable, with the knowledge that your sensitivity might be one of your biggest strengths.

Do you sometimes find yourself operating from outdated beliefs and patterns that no longer serve you? Such patterns can hold us back and make life seem futile and meaningless, leaving us feeling drained and defeated. They may stem from traumatic experiences, life transitions, unexpected events, and setbacks. However, we can find new meaning and inspiration in life even after major setbacks or traumas. We can rekindle creativity and purpose through therapy. I help people update their belief systems and functioning so they can live and experience more adaptive and fuller versions of themselves.

Accepting new clients! I work primarily with LGBTQ+ people who have experienced trauma and are looking to improve their lives. This might be wanting to feel less anxious or depressed, have healthier relationships, have a deeper knowledge of yourself, or something else. I also have a particular interest in working with clients living with disabilities and chronic conditions, especially those who are "in transition" from non-disabled to disabled. I am a Qualifying WPATH Member and can provide mental health services for individuals looking for support specific to gender-related topics, like social & medical transitioning.

LGBTQ, Transgender and gender expansive clients are my specialty and I have been working with this community for over a decade. As a queer person myself, I understand the struggle of coming out or finding your own place in the world. You’re trying to navigate all of the transitions that come with being a teenager or young adult in the world. Maybe you feel overwhelmed and isolated as you try to do it all on your own. Transitions aren’t easy, whether you’re moving from one career to another, out of relationships that no longer serve you, or from college to graduate school. As hard as it can feel when you’re in the midst of it, these changes offer an opportunity for you to explore where you come from, who you are, and who you want to be.

Are you searching for a therapist? There must be a strong fit between the client and the therapist for the work to be productive. I welcome clients looking for a non-judgmental, strength based, solution and action focused approach. I enjoy working with clients who seek a no nonsense, pragmatic approach to life challenges. I do understand that life can sometimes seem irrational and out of control. I believe deeply in the capacity of the human spirit to heal and transcend what may seem insurmountable circumstances and to thrive. Clients can expect a warm, supportive and empathetic relationship when we decide to work together.

I have always loved to read a good story, I think stories can reflect wholeness in their beginnings, middles, and ends. It's all too often that we find ourselves in the middle of the story, feeling disconnected from ourselves and unsure if our story will ever have an ending that feels good and whole. I believe that counseling offers a space to "speak the unspeakable" parts of our stories and invite healing into the darkest places. As we create a safe and trusting relationship, I hope to come alongside you and look inward together with compassion and curiosity.

Feeling overwhelmed? Anxious? Angry? Depressed? Lost? We all face struggles in our lives, and more often than not, it's easier to bear those struggles when we have someone to talk with, to help us hear ourselves and gain a better understanding and perspective than we were able to envision before. Whether you are a young adult seeking direction, a parent with anger issues impacting your family, a person trying to maintain addiction recovery, or a high achiever trying to alleviate anxiety, I see it as my role to help you identify your innate strengths and develop your self compassion in order to help you flourish.

Children experience emotional challenges that may impact their lives. Many of these experiences are normal and expected as they grow and mature. Some childhood experiences may turn out to be more serious and can have a serious impact on a child’s family relationships, school performances, and peer interactions. Children may experience excessive worry, feelings of hopelessness, change in sleep/eating habits and engage in self-destructive behaviors. Whether your child is dealing with normal developmental challenges or something more serious, I am able to help children heal through play and creative expressions.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Decatur?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
