We all experience some distress or discomfort that can prevent us from feeling content and enjoying all that life has to offer. We're often stuck in patterned behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and relationships that only increases our distress and prevents us from being able to move forward. I work collaboratively with people to better understand the patterns of behaviors, thoughts, or feelings that contribute to our distress and develop concrete skills to feel content and enjoy life.

Life can sometimes feel challenging, overwhelming, and lonely - but it doesn’t have to be that way. You deserve to experience happiness and connection. Hurdles don’t have to define you or limit your potential to enjoy a fulfilling life and healthy relationships. Old patterns can be broken, making room for you to replace sadness and fear with joy and confidence.

I am a French American licensed psychotherapist with post graduate training in Psychoanalysis. I am happy to hold sessions in either language. I hold an MBA from The Sorbonne and an MSW from Columbia University. I worked in the business world before changing careers and becoming a psychotherapist. I therefore have a good understanding of the pressures of the business workplace, as well as what it takes to make a significant career change. Over the last 22 years, I have worked in Domestic Violence agencies, and with teenagers around relationship issues in particular, as well as with couples and individuals in my private practice.

Since the age of eight, I have regularly attended counseling, and it saved me. Decades later, counseling has become my calling--my desire to share the techniques that help us cope with the forces in our lives we cannot control. As a natural advocate of mental, physical, and spiritual health, I also teach yoga regularly. I believe that we reach a state of peace, when we take our lives into our own hands. My mission is to help you build your individual strength, gain insight, and develop effective ways of coping with life and relationships.

Seeking therapy is in itself a sign of strength and courage as it can often seem easier to avoid painful issues rather than to address them. You might be feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, anger, sadness or "numbness" or struggling in relationships with others past and present. It can be helpful to know that all of our experiences, especially the most challenging ones are powerful starting points on the road to positive emotional growth and healing transformations. Our pain serves as a motivator, encouraging us to explore something more fully so that we may ultimately become free of its hold upon us.

My goal is to help clients overcome those difficulties that interfere with a life of authenticity, purpose and contentment. I have extensive post-graduate training and years of experience teaching other therapists child, adolescent and adult psychotherapy. Our therapeutic work may offer thoughtful questions, insights, suggestions, skills training and emotional support, drawing on an array of approaches including interpretive understanding, cognitive restructuring, problem solving, Habits of Mind principles and DBT-based affective regulation.I encourage feedback about the process, as this is often vital in refining our work together. Therapy with children and adolescents stresses careful assessment to understand what treatment approaches would be optimal.

Hi, I’m Yitzchok Wagshul. One day, my young grandson asked me what kind of doctor I am. I’m a clinical psychologist, so I replied, “I’m the kind of doctor who helps sad people feel happy.” He looked at me and said, “Zaidy,” (that’s “Grandpa” in Yiddish) "that’s not being a doctor, that’s just being nice!” That’s a cute story, but I want to tell you something: the better part of therapy is “being nice.” I know a lot of psychology. But if I didn’t respect each person I work with, if I didn’t view them with complete acceptance and unconditional positive regard, all of that would be worthless, because no one would listen to me.

Deciding to begin therapy can be stressful and overwhelming. Seeking/Asking for help is not always easy, but it is the first step towards healing. Each person begins therapy with their own challenges and expectations of goals for treatment. As a therapist, I seek to understand your needs within the therapeutic process, and explore strategies to improve your quality of life, and daily functioning. I am a licensed clinical mental health counselor with increased experience in treating clients with anxiety and depression of all ages. I have years of experience in practicing within the Hispanic/Latinx population.

I am currently accepting new clients! Things may have been bothering you for a while, and therapy finally seems accessible. Welcome! You have started your therapy process, and now comes the work. Sometimes we have just one specific thing we want to work on, and sometimes we come in with a suitcase (or two) full of things we want to resolve. This is the starting point.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Brooklyn?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
