Have you noticed that you have been feeling stuck, overwhelmed by your emotions, or preoccupied by certain thoughts? Often psychological pain has more to do with how we fight and judge our thoughts and feelings, and we end up in an exhausting internal struggle that we cannot win. I will work with you to explore this struggle, gain distance from it, and learn strategies to reduce its influence on your life. I have an active, warm and non-judgmental style. My work integrates Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), with motivational enhancement directly at the core.

If you are reading this you have already taken a major step in your personal growth and happiness. I understand that you are here because of your emotional pain. You may feel depressed, feel as though no one understands your pain and find yourself unable to achieve the goals you want for yourself. Relationships are a struggle; it may be difficult to trust and romantic relationships are hard to sustain...nothing seems to work out. However, despite whatever your struggle may be you are determined to get past it and to move forward with your life.

Perhaps you’re anxious, depressed, lonely, or lacking direction. Maybe you’re having relationship problems, or work issues. Perhaps you don’t feel good about yourself and the mirror you look in is distorted. Maybe the negative thoughts are not allowing you to enjoy life fully.

Have you ever experienced a pattern of negativity? Examples of this could be engaging in the same toxic friendships or relationships repetitively, having the same fights over and over with your family, or continuing to work in a job you hate for years and cannot seem to make a change? Intellectually, you may know that these things are changeable and a problem, but emotionally there is something that is keeping you stuck.

Sometimes in life we find ourselves treading water. This may be because of an unresolved internal conflict from our past or as a result of external forces such as systemic oppression, financial hardship, and chronic illness. Therapy can be a collaborative space to retreat from the mental exhaustion we experience when we try to solve our problems in isolation. In my time as a licensed psychotherapist, I’ve found that the work is most effective when the bond between therapist and client is strong, and there is a sense of safety and mutual respect.

I understand that each individual comes from a complex and unique background. Due to this, I thoroughly believe that therapy can not be effective under a “one-size-fits-all” perspective. I strive to make my sessions a fully collaborative experience so that your voice is being heard and our sessions are tailored to what is important to you. Through this approach our sessions will be a gratifying experience in which we identify the root of your concerns and make positive change.

ADHD has become a widely recognized challenge that can be treated medically as well as non-medically. Depending on the child or adult and their specific circumstances and needs, we can help. To assess and diagnose, we have experienced psychiatrists and psychologists on staff. Once diagnosed, if medication is warranted as a part of the treatment plan, the psychiatrist would continue in his/her role as the prescribing physician. He/she would communicate with the other clinicians in the center who, as part of the treatment team, would have non-medical roles in the effective treatment of ADHD and its associated conditions.

In a world where so many expectations are placed upon us, therapy is a place where the only expectation is to show up. Whether you’re struggling with depression, anxiety, life as an artist, relationships, dating, trauma, loneliness, creative blocks, life transitions, low self-esteem, or other challenges, I’ll hold the space for you to feel heard and understood. In the process, you’ll better understand yourself. I’ve worked with performing artists, adults switching careers, and teens and young adults growing into their authentic selves. I aim to foster an environment for self-discovery and expression.

I am eager to collaborate with individuals from all walks of life. My specialization is working with those who identify as LGBTQ+ and/or BIPOC, a focus that resonates with my own life experiences. With a background in business and hospitality that later shifted towards mental health, I am intimately acquainted with the challenges inherent to corporate culture. As a sexual and cultural minority, together we can tackle issues that strive to develop your most cherished self. While our journey might seem challenging or overwhelming at times, remember that the ultimate reward of self-discovery is precious.

My prior experience working with those suffering from substance abuse disorder, anxiety, and complicated grief has strengthened my understanding of the human condition. In addition, my past experience working as a therapist has enhanced my appreciation for the individuality each client displays, and has made me cherish the collaborative process that clients and therapists get to take part in. I cultivate a client-friendly environment and work with my clients to develop their own goals for therapy. I also feel building a rapport with my clients is vital to help them in their growth.

I work with individuals and couples who are seeking to gain a better understanding of themselves in order to lead happier, more productive and more stable lives. I work well with people experiencing anxiety, depression, and mood disorders as well as those dealing with relationship issues who are having difficulty managing the everyday stressors of their lives, which impede on their capacity for productivity and satisfaction. While psychotherapy and psychoanalysis allow individuals to more deeply explore their emotions, behaviors, and relationships, I also integrate skills training, coaching, and coping strategies that allow one to function more effectively in interpersonal, professional, and creative situations.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
