Helping to find long term relief from addictions, depression, anxiety and ADHD has been a priority in my ten year career in the field. Finding the right kind of help isn't always easy, and finding the right therapist can feel intimidating, even frustrating at times My approach is person centered, authentic and designed to help individuals reach the goals that they themselves are establishing in treatment. Use this link to book a free consultation so we can discuss if therapy with me is what feels like the best fit. www.ctacc.org/hunter-mayhew

My background is in chemical dependency training at state and local hospitals where I worked at various levels of care from those who are very early in recovery to those with sustained recovery and ending at a community mental health facility where I supported individuals in transitioning to medication assisted treatment out of Department of Corrections. I was trained as a Sexual Assault Crisis Counselor and worked supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence while they transitioned out of narcissistic patterns of abuse. I have worked with children who have mood disorders, attachment disorders, and conduct disorders.

The same thought has been assaulting you in an agonizing loop of repetition for days on end. Or has it been weeks? One compulsive behavior or another keeps you trapped in a constant cycle of despair. The more you resist, the tighter it grabs you - there's no escape. No one understands how hard it is or that you can't just stop. They couldn’t imagine how much you suffer inside your own mind. So, you hold it all in and suffer in silence, ending each day drained, defeated, and depressed. What you wouldn't give to get your life back, to be free. It’s time to make a change - time to get unstuck.

Change is an elemental force, often imposing its will on us when we least expect it. It can also be one of the most elusive things in our lives when we try to enact it on our own. Understanding our relationship to change, and what prevents it, provides us the opportunity to harness its power in our own lives. Understanding how your experiences and systemic forces have impacted your life will also be key to our work together as we build a new path forward for you. You have all the energy to enact change inside of you, the next step is determining what prevents this.

Life has a rhythm. There are times when things seem to come together, where life seems smooth. There are times when the future seems certain and predictable. There are also times when nothing seems easy, when we feel stuck and the future seems uncertain or unpredictable. Regardless of where you are in the rhythm of your life, you may feel like you need a change. At those times it helps to think about movement-because movement is power. And therapy can help.

“Hope is important because it can make the present moment less difficult to bear. If we believe that tomorrow will be better, we can bear a hardship today.” – Thich Nhat Hahn. Therapy is a journey we are often reluctant to take. Once we begin that journey, our mind & body become exposed to new thoughts, emotions, and experiences. My goal as a therapist is to assist the client to focus on developing achievable goals, coping strategies, problem solving skills, and alleviating symptoms related to life’s social & emotional challenges. Together we will create a treatment plan which will meet your social & emotional needs.

I have limited openings during the day - Every person has the capability to change their life for the better and I am honored to assist in this process. I also firmly believe laughter is excellent medicine for the mind and soul. When appropriate, I incorporate humor into my therapeutic style. After all, just because we are doing difficult work, does not mean we can't smile or laugh along the way. I operate from a philosophy which emphasizes an individual's exploration into identifying faulty assumptions or unhealthy thought patterns which may impact their daily activities and interactions with others.

Most of us begin therapy because we are ready for change, and ready TODAY. Has depression or anxiety impacted you? Do you notice certain patterns repeating in your life and in your relationships? Have you been feeling stagnant, or experiencing big changes? Perhaps you've already been in therapy but still feel stuck. I bring over 20 years of experience helping clients analyze the patterns in their lives, connect with inner strength and utilize those inner resources to help them live in better alignment with their core values and life passions.

Immediate daytime availability for new clients on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays! Finding a therapist can be more difficult than one would expect. With so many providers having long waitlists, not responding to inquiries, or not being in network with your insurance, finding a good fit can be overwhelming! I am happy to share that I am accepting new telehealth clients. If you are feeling motivated to explore thought patterns and beliefs contributing to your symptoms, to learn new skills, and you’re looking for a therapist who is kind and gentle, but also direct and honest, I may be the therapist you are looking for.

If you are considering therapy for yourself, child, or family, there is a reason for it, and one that you have to trust. Therapy can help you reach your specific goals such as improved relationships, working through a difficult past, or a recent life transition. When working with children, I seek to understand their perceptions, while bolstering their reasoning and communication skills. The ways in which we reflect on our stories are evolutionary and developmental, changing over time.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Cheshire?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
