I enjoy working with people who are experiencing life transitions, stress, anxiety, mild to moderate depression, relational difficulties, and adolescents that may be having issues in school who are on the middle to upper spectrum of autism, or struggle with anxiety, adjustment difficulties or learning disabilities, mens issues, veterans, single mothers. People who want to succeed and move forward in their life in whatever area of struggle they may have. I offer 10 minute consultation so we can both determine if moving forward would be beneficial.

I believe in meeting each individual where they are in their journey with acceptance and curiosity. I offer compassion, authenticity, and care to help you uncover and satisfy your unmet needs. Many of us are wounded, but we are not broken. When we discover and meet our needs, our nervous systems reset and offer up a whole new place from which to live life. Counseling can help you understand and undo patterns of thought and behavior that unconsciously keep you from truly connecting with yourself and others. You can find peace.

No matter how hard you try, it is just not "good enough." You feel like you are drowning in a pile of “to do” list that never seems to end. You crave balance in your day, and wonder how to have balance when pulled in multiple directions. You are overwhelmed and overstimulated with racing thoughts, daily responsibilities, and the never ending to do list. Your inner critic tells you that you are not good enough for your partner (or deserving of a partner), your kids, and all those you love. You feel a sense of guilt & shame you’re not “measuring up” to those around you, much less the aspirations you have for yourself.

"What if I crumble under the pressure?" You appear calm on the outside but on the inside you're wondering if you're really cut out for this. You worry that people will think you're a "fraud" or "impostor". (A very common fear). You're tired of people telling you that you're "overthinking it." Performance anxiety is real. Athletes, performers, business professionals, and test takers all experience it and it's debilitating - making it difficult to think clearly and perform effectively, let alone enjoy what you're doing. You're ready for a mindset change, a different way to do things.

It's difficult, if not impossible, to truly thrive in life when you are suffering. Whether you're experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, or feeling abused, neglected, or misunderstood, having a regular time and space to talk about these issues in a safe and confidential space is essential to working through them. Those who commit to this process discover that, over time, their suffering is more manageable than they thought, and that living a more fulfilling life is well within their grasp.

Real change is possible. Successful therapy explores human life in its fullest sense - what we do, what we think, and what we feel - while being grounded in the deep experience of living in a human body. My primary therapeutic framework is called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which provides a rich, evidence-based, blend of mindful and somatic interventions, along with a strong cognitive and behavioral orientation. Together, my clients and I examine our deepest values, and how those values are expressed in how we live each day. Our lives are not problems to be solved - they are opportunities to flourish.

You're an ambitious person, and you love what you do, but recently something has changed. All of a sudden you don't feel like yourself anymore. You feel exhausted and overwhelmed. You used to feel successful and competent, but these days you don't feel like you are getting anything right. On the surface, things look great, but inside you worry that it's all falling apart. When you lay down at night, you can't seem to quiet your mind, and you wonder if you will ever feel "normal" again.

When I was an adolescent I was a Bart Simpson. I was routinely sent to the office, struggled with peer relationships and had frequent conflicts with authority figures. I relate well with teen and young adult males because I still partake in lifting, skating, and gaming. It can be difficult navigating the labyrinths of life, be it conflicts with parents, the effects of divorce, the aftermath of abuse, etc. Long story short, with good decisions and coping skills, you can overcome your problems and correct the course of your ship.

I am devoted to working with individuals who are curious about when and how their suffering and emotional distress began. In my work, I notice that such suffering is often the result of long established patterns of thinking and acting. Such patterns were at one time essential for the individual to cope with distress but with repetition and the accumulation of life experiences, they can become destructive. The power of a therapist trained to make space for such sufferings can provide alleviation from long standing pain.

Are you a smart and intuitive person who is interested in going to hard places in order to create the change you desire? The brain wants to heal itself and sometimes it needs a little help to get there. Our work together would help you understand why you believe what you believe, why your emotions can sometimes run away with you and creating imbalance for your mind and body. Finding beliefs that aren't working anymore for you and finding self compassion are my strengths.

Therapy is a space in which the depths of our emotions and needs can be felt, expressed, and better understood. As a therapist, I use language to help process trauma, heal past injuries, and enable progress. I find that the process of talking loosens stagnation, repetition, or confusion. It makes room for new insight and understanding, and provides relief from restrictive ways of thinking or acting. If you have a heartfelt desire to know and understand yourself, and a willingness to talk, you are at a great starting point.

My goal as a therapist is to help participants uncover their inner strength and ability to adapt to challenging life experiences. I enjoy creating new relationships based on the common goal of growth and I always attempt to make therapy an enjoyable experience, whether working with an 8 year old or a 49 year old! I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship as well as the opportunities for nature and therapeutic activities to increase personal growth. Most importantly, I believe in the ability for positive change to occur with an individual who is dedicated to this pursuit.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
