With over twenty years experience in LGBTQ counseling, research, and teaching, I have a deep understanding of our community. Among LGBTQ individuals anxiety and depression may involve feelings of emptiness, relationship problems, interpersonal sensitivity, or addictions. The roots of these struggles can vary, but it helps to have a therapist who grasps the alienating impact of growing up in a world that disavows the core of who we are. I will help you address these issues, and others, through a deeper approach that can feel energizing, challenging, and even liberating.
My approach involves collaborative partnership with you, and takes effort on both our parts. I use emotion-focused and cognitive methods, dream work, and attention to your unconscious to help you develop the "mental muscle" to stop avoiding yourself, in a warm and active manner that builds on your strengths.
I stay current through ongoing study and research, as well as teaching in the USC Department of Psychiatry and Pacifica Graduate Institute’s clinical psychology PhD program. I trained at the Los Angeles LGBT Center and Valley Community Counseling Clinic, and specialized in LGBTQ-related research at AIDS Project Los Angeles.
