Melissa J Weaver, LMHC, ATR, Art Therapist in Riverside
People who engage in art therapy do not have to be "artists;" it is not a fine arts institution. Simply come equipped with curiosity and innate creativity. Where words can fail us, textures, images, and colors can give voice to thoughts and emotions. I have been privileged to witness children and teens living with anxiety, mood disorders, OCD, ADHD, trauma histories, and numerous other psychological, developmental, and behavioral problems find success in therapeutic art-making. I currently facilitate outpatient groups in addition to individualized and group services for patients admitted to Bradley Hospital's inpatient and partial programs.
I am a licensed mental health counselor and art therapist who works with the Pediatric Partial Program, Adolescent Partial Programs, Pediatric Anxiety Research Center Partial Programs, and Outpatient Services. I bring medium based exploration and a process oriented approach to art-making with children and adolescents.
Art therapy is an effective form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of communication. Participants are encouraged to explore their creativity, bridging inner experience and the outer world. With continued practice, the creative process can help improve the physical, mental and emotional well-being of participants.
