Has anyone ever told you that you’re harsh on yourself? Or that you always bend over backwards for others? Have you wished that you had more meaningful relationships or that your social anxiety wouldn’t keep you from life events? It can be exhausting to try to have it all together & not be able to share how you’re really feeling. What if you could treat yourself the way you do with your friends or loved ones? As a high-performing, high-achieving, self-critical, and/or perfectionistic professional in a fast-paced city, that can feel unattainable.

I help individuals gain the courage and emotional comfort needed to ultimately alter one’s perception of self that may have been altered due to some form of trauma and/or loss. My therapeutic framework addresses psychological angst and despair as it relates to one's inability to actualize his or her potential—spiritually, personally and emotionally.

Love. Joy. Ecstasy. Awe. In my 18 years of clinical experience, I’ve discovered that we each have far more capacity for these expansive feelings than we often realize. Whether you are contending with many challenges, or feel ready to fly through the stars, I can work with you collaboratively to shape a life that fulfills your highest dreams, and maybe even soars beyond them. I’m eager to share what I’ve learned about our abilities to break out of old patterns of pain, fear, and shame into fruitful creativity and communion with the most inspiring aspects of being alive.

I have the honor of accompanying fellow LGBTQIA+ individuals of color, especially those moving through life transitions, first-generation undergraduate & graduate students, academics, artists, writers, and those holding intersectional identities rooted in multicultural and interracial families, partnerships, and transcultural and/or adult adoption. In addition, I work with couples as well as poly individuals and ethically/consensually non-monogamous partnerships.

Clients come to me with concerns, including anxiety, depression, family conflict, and struggles with intimacy. They feel stuck, angry with those around them, or caught in destructive patterns of behavior, yet they cannot seem to understand why. The relationship we build during treatment is a powerful tool to address these patterns that you feel unable to escape. Psychotherapy provides you space to safely explore these issues and work towards changing the patterns. I help my clients develop an appreciation for their life and work. Together we will explore the uncomfortable feelings and behaviors that prevent inner fulfillment, pursuit of goals, and overall life satisfaction.

Regardless of what you are dealing with, I believe in the potential to harness your inner resources to heal and grow. Connecting deeply with the right therapist can help you get to where you want to be. When you become more aware of what is going on consciously and unconsciously in your mind and body, you can be more effectual, less anxious and/or depressed, and have more energy and joy in your life. As I get to know you and we create a safe and meaningful relationship, we can make fundamental changes that will have a lasting effect.

Greetings to those seeking healing - I am Amanda Martell, LCSW. I work with women, children and adolescents. I have found that we all have something we are healing from. Whether it is anxiety, previous trauma, stress, or just needing someone to talk to for extra support - I am here to aid in a range of needs. Thank you for stopping by. You probably already know that most people find relationships challenging especially the romantic, intimate, sexual kind. Perhaps you're frustrated, discouraged, disappointed and resentful about it all. Perhaps you feel burdened or obligated by your relationship. Or perhaps you feel a whole bunch of lacks; lack of love, lack of affection, lack of connection, lack of warmth, lack of sex etc... Regardless of the particular relationship challenge or challenges you might be facing, I can help.

I hold a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and have a private practice in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, NY. I previously led a mindfulness meditation group at the University of Chicago, where I completed my doctoral and post-doctoral training. In my practice I work with late adolescents and adults across the lifespan. I consider myself a generalist as I do not limit my work to one type of person or concern, but I specifically enjoy working with people who have relational concerns. I seek to establish a trusting, accepting, and collaborative relationship with my clients to support them in navigating life's many challenges.

Through the process of psychotherapy, individuals can experience a transformation that brings more energy, optimism, love, ambition, friendships, joy, career success, and improved relationships. It requires patience and time, but the positive changes are worth it. As someone who has learned effective ways to motivate people towards positive changes, I feel fortunate to witness my clients overcome emotional obstacles and achieve the fulfilling life they desire.

If you're here, perhaps there's something you're curious about - your habits, your patterns, how your past relates to your present. We're curious, too. Our work is psychodynamic, which means we're interested not only in what you say and do, but what you're not saying and not doing. These elusive dimensions of your personality can often have a huge influence on your life, but often you're not even aware of their presence. They "speak" in the form of anxieties, preoccupations, unhealthy relationships, and thought-processes that stop you from understanding who you really are.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
